Default Control Module Failures

Is anyone besides me having control module failures? (The piece of logic board inside your left or right hand controls).

I have had 2 fail... which seem to be tied to when riding in a big rain storm.

Thanks in advance.

Yes - there have been reports of that. Is your bike still under warranty?

If not, and the second one failed less than a year ago, Harley may replace it.

The better option is the lighted ones - that are much better.

Yes it is a known issue with one of HD's suppliers. I just had mine replaced. It started originally after washing the bike. I do not power wash and always gentle around controls. The trip odo button would not function properly after the wash but after drying it our it worked again. Notified the dealer of what happened and they made a memo that it happened while still under warranty. Failed again 4 month after warranty expired and they still covered the replacement of the whole switch assembly. Close to a $300 replacement with labor if you have to pay for the new part.

Hmm interesting. While I was at the dealership getting my tires put on (esp) a customer had the same issue with no cruise control. Just out of curiosity have you changed the grips or adjusted the levers positioning?

No... it is water related. $230 for the part + labor to fix a horn button this time... I have an extended warranty but both times the module has failed the service departments at two different dealers just look at me like this is a total mystery to them. The first time I lost everything but the turn signal... neutral safety, cruise, horn, etc.

Failure 1 was due to a ride in a big rainstorm. Failure 2 was after a wash.

After the first one I tried embedding the module in dialectic grease... not thinking about the fact that heat would eventually turn the grease into oil... so this time the switch on the top only went because the grease had stopped protecting the entire module (ran down to the bottom). I am thinking of trying wrapping the module in packaging sheet plastic... that stuff that sticks to itself like glue.

Way 2 go HD... use circuit boards and BCMs everywhere with parts made in China/Taiwan and sell the parts for double what they are worth since we can't fix them ourselves anymore.

The dealer is going to "test to confirm". It has a DTC of U0141 which is a COMM with LHCM error. There are 4 wires... Power, Ground, BCM high, BCM low... some of the switches still work and there is no power to the horn. DUH... what test is necessary? Money to the dealer compliments of HD. Requires me to make TWO trips to the dealer to get this fixed. They need to keep these modules in stock it would seem to me.

Had my kill switch stop working intermittently with about 1900 miles on the bike. It did this over the course of about a week or so until it finally stopped working all together. Replaced under warranty of course. I never blast the controls when washing but I've ridden in some pretty big rain storms. No clue what actually caused it to fail.

Since you have the extended service, my suggestion - have the dealer call them. You have already paid to have this replaced once - so, I would ask that you not be charged again.

Next, tell the dealer the issue is the part - have him upgrade you to the lighted - my bet is you will find a different setup.

Had to have mine changed, dealer knew of the problem, and said HD knows of the issue, this was quite a few miles back, no issue since, started with the odometer button on top, and got worse from there, I thought i was told theu upgraded the part, can't remember for sure
