Barnett Scorpion Lock-up Review 2016 SGS
I was told about the AIM VPC unit, but didn't want to take the chance it would do the job. I opted to pony up the cash for the Scorpion Lock-up clutch with billet basket. I found it cheapest on direct cycle parts for about $1k.
The install was pretty straight forward. Do yourself a favor and take your stock ring gear to a reputable machinist to drill out the stock basket and press in the hub & bearing. My buddy had the drill press and offered to do it for me. Something ended up getting out of whack and he drilled the holes oblong.
After I got that all squared away, I was right back on track. I did use the flat steel seat & the dished seat in my install and also used synthetic ATF per the clutch tech @ Barnett. I initially put in a combo of gold & green springs but couldn't even pull in the lever; swapped out to all gold springs and it felt much better.
My first ride was very pleasant. The first shift into first didn't even make the classic HD clunk. Finding neutral was also no problem. The clutch lets out just as it did when stock; its very smooth and I don't have any unusual noise. I definitely feel a difference in the way the clutch handles. for 1, my speedo rises way faster than my tachometer now and I'm certain if I were to dyno it now my numbers would be better. The lever does get stiffer as the RPM's increase, but it is very manageable.
That HD clunk will happen from time to time now, but that is not an issue for me. Overall I am very satisfied with this clutch and how it performs. I have a trip scheduled Saturday down to the Smokey Mountains so I'll report back when I return.
