I'm not trying to be a jerk, honestly, but... wouldn't it just be easier to follow the road signs if your route is just on one roadway? I can follow long sections of Route 66 thru Missouri without a GPS...
There are certainly sections of Rt 66 that are marked via highway signs better than others. I was following the EZ 66 Guide book which shows multiple 'paths/versions' the road took over the years (not every version has signage), and I sometimes mixed/matched my selections to allow me to see the sites/attractions that interested ME. In addition to plotting the turns, I used waypoints to plot POIs along the way that I may not have noticed otherwise.
Sure it was a lot of work (did it over the long MN winter), but it helped me familiarize myself with the route/attractions/etc a little more before hitting the road. You know, just in case there was a mapping/routing/user error - there were plenty !
Some people want to take interstate that runs along much of Rt 66 and exit just in time to see the 'main attractions'. That was not how I wanted to do it.

To each his own.
That's not how I would want to do it either - I'd want to do it the way you did.
And I was unaware about poor markings in some areas. Now it all makes sense.
