Howards a great guy and probably the best in the business, but again, this is a biased opinion
Maybe when someone without any affiliation to suspension manufactures runs all suspension possibilities head to head ill believe it

No doubt, Showa is a very good and capable manufacturer...

but, Showa is building the suspension to Harley specifications.... which is like 1950s technology..... it can only be so good....

If your fluid change makes you happy all is good. I have done that and purchased progressive and Legends. I would call that real time testing.
Make the change to a good quality drop in kit and a good rear shock and you will see what many are saying.

I am running stock up front and progressive 944's in the back. Unless I'm missing something the setup works good. It could be a little softer but i have the heavy springs on the 944's. I may send them back and have them swapped out with standard springs over the winter.

I’m sure it works “pretty good” for you, as you said. But, as with most things there is a big difference between “pretty good” and “the best that money can buy”.

A ford pinto will eventually get you from point a to point b (maybe, lol) but i’d rather have a Lamborghini for the trip.

I went with the Ohlins FKC102 and the HD772, the 102's came in first and I did the install, rode about 1000 miles and couldn't think the ride could get any better, then the 772's came in got them installed went for a 20 mile ride because it was cold, but yesterday went on a 100 mile ride and I just keep smiling, I cant believe Harley would put out motorcycles with such a bad suspension, I keep looking for pot holes to ride over and could not believe how much better the ride was. I looked at Progressive's and Legend's but decided on the Ohlins, the Ohlins comes stock on a lot of bikes and the others don't, I can't say how the others work but I'm very happy with the Ohlins.

Thumbs up Ohlins

Ohlins front and rear. Live in North GA mountains and they are sweet. So sweet I also did the detachable tour pak which makes the bike even better.
Ultra Limited. Do the research and don't waste your money on the old technology. I always put Ohlins on my BMWs. GT,RT and GS.

Yeah, okay. When someone who doesn't know anything about suspension agrees with me, then maybe you'll believe them. Rock on!

I did not wish to waste my time on this. There are many posts I have written so without using the search option, my time has become worthless. It is not. To put this concept in the simplest terms, let us reiterate:

  1. The purpose of suspension is to keep the tire on the road for traction. That is it.
  2. I see many unqualified member's here evaluating products with absolutely no qualifications other than they should be prohibited to ever use tools.
  3. The most money on shock development is spent in making the shocks shaft move up and down with the least amount of impediment thus making the tire move up and down with the least amount of drag. Traction.
  4. If you have to move the frame as part of the suspension because the tire is not moving to the road surface than the tire can not stay connected to the road. Some say the ride is smooth whereas the frame is limiting not moving as much. All a product of the quest of improved traction.
  5. Put a spoon in a jar of heated honey to decrease the viscosity and move said spoon up and down.
  6. Put the said jar inside of a refrigerator, let cool and repeat said movement of the spoon.
If there is any more discussion needed on this concept than I believe starting out by funding "Mad" Mike Hughes to put in a second seat in his garage built rocket and launched from the back of a converted RV so you all can debunk once and for all this myth that the earth is round and not flat.
