Oh, okay, that makes sense. My 772s were off-the-shelf, so it took several tries before I finally got the preload and rebound damping set to my liking.

It took me about a week and a half to get my 3-3's. I got them mounted, but still need to do more work on the set-up. It's too cold here to do the test ride. Lol.

Not sure if this helps anyone, but I ended up using the spacers both in board and outboard of the shock mounting points. The inboard ones were to help ease the installation and removal of the passenger backrest, and the outboard were for 2 reasons...1) roughly the same thread engagement from the bolt into the mounting location as with the original shocks (maybe 1/8" less thread engagement), and 2) I liked that thick spacer being pushed against the sleeve instead of the thin flat washer from the factory.

I only used 1 spacer inboard at the top mount on both sides to help with alignment. I have a permanent mounted tour pak so no problem there.

Did you measure per Howard's instructions and come up with that spacer location? I'm just asking because it seems odd mine didn't need anything to offset the shock for alignment, and yours did. Makes me wonder if I screwed up....

Do Howard's mount differently than what Ohlins' installation instructions show? If so, I wonder why?

I didn't really notice a difference in the mounting from Ohlin's vs. Howard's instructions. The Ohlins version doesn't talk about ensuring the top and bottom mounting points are aligned, but Howard's does. I had email issues, and didn't have Howard's instructions handy when I started mounting mine, that's why I started doing the spacers the way I did....but it seemed to work out well for me after checking measurements, etc.

The original shock mounting tab on my HD Premium ride adjustable shocks were about 1" thick. With the new Ohlins thinner shock mount, and the 2 spacers, the overall thickness was approximately 1 1/8".

If there is a gap between the lower and upper shock mounting points, you use use shims/spacers. You put a bolt in the lower mount then use a straight edge, rotate it up to the upper mount up to see if there is a gap. If there is you shim/space that gap.
