for you numbers guys, I am not sure you are dividing by zero or not. but the answer is either zero or infinity
depending on which number is the numerator or denominator. does not matter. display should be blank or zero.

ratio of wheel speed to engine speed is the whole algorithm. just arithmetic.

I have no inside information on this subject, just read it in the owners manual.

Numbers are our friend. Now stop thinking and ride.

Only two numbers determine what is displayed. engine rpm and wheel speed.

think like a computer, not a mechanical device.

when you come to a stop, you are dividing by zero and the answer is meaningless. perhaps zero should be displayed.
when you pull in the clutch lever, you are destroying the logic behind the calculation. engine rpm now is meaningless for this application.

if you want to fiddle with starting a and stopping in high gears, slipping the clutch, yeah, you can confuse the calculations but get a life.

in gear, moving, hands off the clutch lever, stock gearing, it works as designed.
Yep!
Very good explanation, and exactly how it works.

Clutch lever either all the way pulled in, or all the way out. Anything else, and you can get unpredictable results on the gear display.
This is also why even with the clutch lever all the way out, a slipping clutch can show the same results.

kickstatfan -thanks for sharing.

So, if I put my bike in first gear, run the rpms up and continue in first gear to say 45mps, are you saying the gear indicator would show something like 3rd gear (even though I am actually in first?

Our son has a Suzuki Blvd Boss. Your start in first gear. Pull off and when the engine whines go to second. Keep going and you would think that 3rd gear would come soon. However, that bike is a little different. At 45 mph, you'd better still be in 3rd gear - otherwise it lugs. 4th gear takes you up to somewhere around 60 or so.

I hear what you are saying - but, since I don't seem to have the issue that the OP has, I am not tinkering to find out.

No, the gear indicator would still show 1st gear, because of the RPM vs Wheel Speed calculation the computer is doing.

For any given engine RPM vs wheel speed, there a very predictable speed that ratio will produce. A computer can do this instantly, and displays the calculated gear based the math it sees.

What kickstartfan explained, is that if you "slip" the clutch any (lever not all the way in or all the way out), you are messing those calculations up, and may not get accurate results.

numbers guys can be picky. assuming you mean mph, not mps, (45 miles per second is fast even for Suzuki )

as long you keep your hand off the clutch lever, the gear indicator will read 1st gear from idle to red line. \

I keep saying clutch lever not pulled in because "clutch engaged" or "clutch not engaged" can be misunderstood.

my point here is there is no fix to be had.

a mechanical device that looked into the gearbox and checked which gear is engaged would not be as confusing.

this is the 21st century and we done gone digital. get used to it.

Whew - yep, I meant mph (lol).

I am not going to try anything - my bike is running just fine. I do however hope the original OP comes back and tell us if this just started.
