You may well be right. I learned about the upgrade the other day.
At the cost of just over $1500 -plus installation, I think this is a whole lot cheaper than buying a new bike. My 2014 had about 45,000 miles on it - and the ESP is valid until Sept 2020.
While this has my attention, I am still waiting for a way to get the android auto on the system - and I somehow believe that is what is going to happen.
One guy here has a bad radio and it is in the process of being replaced under warranty- wonder if they will give him the upgrade? Guess it depends on how many of the old radios they have laying around.
I think it's an inevitable result of pressure from H-D rivals in the marketplace. Perhaps there is not as much pressure in the motorcycle industry, but automobile manufacturers are constantly trying to "one-up" each other. One would think that H-D would want to, out of the goodness of their hearts, provide their customers the latest and greatest safety and technological advances on their motorcycles, but we all know that's wishful thinking.
Also, I'm pretty sure H-D saw a modest increase in the number of GTS unit sales due to Soundz coming out with their retrofit kit for '14-'18 systems. They may have already had a new GTS unit in the works before Soundz came out with their retrofit kit, but for one reason or another, they couldn't get it out any quicker.
Something bigger and better is coming with the next model year to replace the boom infotainment unit.
Interesting that HD all of a sudden is offering the GTS as an upgrade on the 2014 and up touring models.
I predict the competition is forcing an upgrade and they need to move units.
We saw what happened to the 110 motors filter down to non-CVO models after the M8 was introduced.
Or maybe they said it wouldnt work to force more new bike sales. Most of the competitors are still using the same radios they have been using for years just upgrading in the system.
If course something new and better is coming just like the ever larger engines, dual bending valves front suspension, emulsion shocks, ongoing improvements to the ABS and now the RDRS. The real heat on H-D is the new Indian water cooler engine in addition to the heat from the EPA on all air cooled engines emissions. I expect to see new/improved components and systems every year going forward. All large manufacturers don't stock parts it's all just in time delivery nothing sitting on the shelves going obsolete.
