Default Replacing riser bushings take off triple tree?

I was talking to a guy who told me you have to take off the triple tree to replace the riser bushings on my m8 road glide. I was baffled as I remember doing it on my 2013 Glide without such labor. Is there something I am unaware of aside from the fact that finding the right tool to fit up under tree to loosen and tighten them?

On my 2013 I turned the bars one way and used an extension of some sort. Removed and placed one side, and turned the bars the other way and did the other side.

Should be the same way now. The only problem is its really tight to get the risers bolts loose up under that fairing. May have to use a swivel and come up from the bottom. Just as an aside, why are you changing them?

I can’t see that being true. I just did my riser bushings on my 2016 road king and was absolutely no reason to remove the triple tree. I got in just fine with a 3/4 short socket.

I have tall bars and stock bushings. Whomever put the original apes on the bike ( the guy who told me the tree has to come off actually) didn't do poly bushings. I had a different set of bars put on assuming it had polys as it had apes and they guy who did it ( different guy) didn't tell me until I showed up and asked about it. Gonna have another set of heated grips put on and figured it's the time to do it. The bars are already off then he says free must come off.

I guess that's the " right" way to do it. Thanks for the info. I was thinking the bar and rider set up on the m8 is the same as my 2013.

Depending on the lift you are using, you just have to have the ability to turn the wheel to gain access. I was unable to access without turning the front wheel.

Just my experience.

I should’ve added to my above comment that I did mine with the bike on the ground.

Which is how I did it last time so I could rotate the bars from one side to the other to have access to the riser bolts.

I have never done a RG but on my RK I was able to turn the bars one way, and get a c-clamp upside down in there to squeeze the bushings in, the turn the other way for the others.

I did mine without taking them off. As described just turn the wheel one way and install that one and then turn the other for the second. You will probably need a different through bolt though. The stock one is either too short or too long. If I am remembering correctly then it’s too short.

I did mine on the ground and didnt have to pull the triple tree to do so. Pull your fairng cover and unbolt your turn signals, tilt the inner fairing and you have access to the risers to change the bushings> Plenty of videos if you have more questions.
