So my cousin and his wife are considering doing that Beartooth Rally, Red Lodge, Montana, this July. I am considering it as well, but its a 1300 mile, one way trip. Never done one that long yet. Longest single day was 325 miles on my Sportster, so guessing I am looking at 3 days each way here, if I want to feel human when I get there. Google says its a 20hr ride. Am kinda doubtful I could do successful 10 hr days. I am 68, and have ridden since I was 14, but not long trips.
Anyone ever done this Rally? Was it worth the trip?
Depending on the weather, hotel availabilities, etc, I might tent camp.......might. Lol
The event is nice and the city has a lot of history, but Bear Tooth Pass and Chief Joseph highway are special. I went once just for the ride and will go again. So yes it is worth the trip. Also be aware that on July 1 the top of the pass will be cold and probably have snow/ice on the ground. Spectacular.......

I'm 69, and I wouldn't hesitate! Great road, and Red Lodge is a nice town. 325 miles on a Sportster is a LOT harder than that same 325 miles on a Glide. Do it, you'll love it!
I looked at your profile trying to find where you are located but just Somewhere out West
If we knew where you are starting from we could suggest routes and places to see on the way.
I live near San Luis Obispo, CA. It's called the Central Coast, which encompasses from Santa Barbra, to Monterey. I am about dead center of those two, but sadly, not on the coast. Am about 30 miles inland.
Basically my choices are hwy 101 north thru the Bay area then east, or Interstate 5 thru the same. The other option would be going to the east side of the mountains, and up hwy 395. I doubt I would go that route. Its beautiful, but I do not want to get into snow or ice if I can avoid it.
We talked a few days ago about the XM radio and carplay, etc. We are the same age.
Wife and I took the trip, I am 68, she is 23(lol). For us, it was just under 1700 miles. We tried to get about 400 miles per day, so, we spent 3 nights in hotels along the way. As someone mentioned, 400 miles on your Limited is way ncier than 400 miles on a sportster.
Are you one or two up. You are considering camping - while we use to love to camp, we discovered it was really nice to roll into a hotel, get a nice room and enjoy yourself. I am a big user of hotel credit card rewards. in some cased, you can get around 10 free nights - just spending on thing that you normally wood.
Hyatt for example will get you 50,000 hotel points. Just got Radisson, 85,000 points. I tend to spend my winter gathering these so I can use them for bike travel. I used very few last year because of Covid. In 2019, my bet is I probably only paid for two hotel room s in all of my trips.
So, please do go - and enjoy. Just, take your time
As far as I know now, if I do this, it will be one up, sadly. Would love for my wife to go along, but thats a long ride for her.
I think ideally I would shoot for about 500 a day, and maybe slower if its very scenic, but I have seen most of the route already. My wife has a cousin that just moved to the Meridian ID area, and I thought I might sneek a night there, but looking at the map, its 75 miles, one way, out of my way. Have to think about that one.
He other cousin, who I would meet up with, has not confirmed they are going there, as yet. Not going unless he does. I am not a real outgoing person in crowds, and am not a partier, really, just want to experience a rally or two before I no longer can.
