I drained the primary, took the cover off to check the chain tensioner. Everything was good except the fluid had a bad burnt smell with silver tint to it. The smell was worse than burnt tranny fluid. I put it back together and filled primary.
I Now have 300 miles on new fluid and it's smells burnt again. I have no electrical problems, battery is charging. Battery has 12.3 volts not running, key on.
I haven't had the time to dig deeper into the primary Any ideas? I did post this in the primary section .
A fluid change never gets all the old fluid out, so that would account for the burned smell in the newer fluid. If the old fluid was silvery I would have run a magnet through it to see what was in it. Clutch material is normal but if, for example, there was a lot of steel sticking to the magnet, I would lean toward the comp being bad. Aluminum would likely be from the clutch basket and would warrant further investigation also.
That chain is made of a lot of moving parts too, so depending on service interval it could be worn.
I haven’t yet had time to go any farther to see what’s going on in the primary. With bike running The battery is 14.3 v so I’m kinda ruling out stator issue, but will look . The magnet on drain plug really didn’t have metal on it.
Until then bike sits.
Thanks all
