Default Shift shaft change

Through 2016 Touring models had 33709-82a shift shaft, starting in 2017 with the M8 the part number is 33600091. Does anybody know if there is any difference or did they just change the part number?

If exactly the same part, no need to, nor would they, change the part number...

Is it a thick vs thin primary cover issue?

Looks like the 2017 has a different gear shift lever. Maybe that has something to do with a different part number for the shift shaft.
