2014 Bluetooth Testing
First, it looks like HD only configured the radio to be a head set. That explains all the frustration people have around why it won't sync with a blue tooth headset. It thinks that is the only thing it can be. For those who say it can't be both, look at the Garmin 660. It can be both a headset for my phone and then send that phone voice, and it's internal mp3 player, back out to my bluetooth headset. So, it CAN be done. There is no good reason why the HD radio can not be a music player and connect to a different head set. I suspect that if HD ever decides to sell a bluetooth headset of their own, we will shortly after that see that capability enabled. :P
That means that you only get 2 options after you add a device. The device can either be a phone, or a music player.
My Android version 2.2, very old, phone will sync with it, but won't stay synced.
Keep getting error messages. It says it is music player synced also, and it played about half a song once, but never again. I suspect it is my old phone. The phone tried to sync my contacts to the radio. That looked like it worked one time. I suspect the timeouts I am getting are during the contact sync process, but I can't be sure since it disconnects completely and just says the sync failed. Actually, it is that sync failed message that makes me suspecious. Since both the phone and the radio say that the device is connected until that failure message, I am "assuming" that the initial protocal connection worked. That leaves me to think it is the contact sync that failed. BTW: The phone will still say connected. It is the HD Radio that is disconnecting. Maybe I have too many contacts and it is running out of room for them. I have over 400 contacts in my phone book.
My Xoom tablet syncs fine and will play music through pandora. But, it is wifi only. That won't help me while on the road.
It does tell me that blue tooth with pandora is possible if I can get a phone that will work. Stopping pandora and starting the music player also works. The skip forward and back on the handlebars works. With pandora, the skip to next song works from the handle bars. There is no skip back function of course so that doesn't work. What I would like to see is a pause and play button also! Not a must have, but it makes a lot of sense to be there if they are thinking about the next generation radio.
My Scala Rider Q2 was not even be recognized in the add devices list.
I did not try to sync my Garmin since I am trying to not have to use it. I suspect that it might sync as a music player since it has that capability. I may later to play with what it can do also. It does not see my phone as a music player, just as a phone.
As for USB, that is all about if it recognizes the device or not. I have a SD card to USB adaptor that I use. It is not recognized.
My phone when plugged into the USB port is seen, and it plays the mp3's on it.
I have a back up hard disk that is USB and it works also. I would not use it on the road since it is actually a physical hard disk, and not a thumb drive. It would ruin the spinning disk. Just find it interesting that it works and the SD card version does not!

Your USB device needs to use FAT32 formatting. You'll have issues with other formats.
For the cost of a USB thumb drive (less than $10), buy a thumb drive, make sure it's formatted as FAT32 & put some music on it.
