If one takes the time to look at the dyno run graphs shown on a number of aftermarket web sites promoting high flow kits, the power gains come on above the rpm point that we ride at. Unless one rides at WOT constantly, all one gets is some feel good noise from the air intake.
I'll throw a little more fuel on the fire, in my shop when we get cars that come in with a lot of drivability issues (especially with younger guys) we look to see if a K&N filter is installed, and in most cases it is, the excess oil from these filters has to go somewhere and it goes to and coats sensors such as "Mass Air Flow" "Manifold Absolute Pressure" Air Temperture" "Idle Air Control", these sensors then send false readings to the ECM when coated with oil and dirt, most times they can be cleaned, but in some cases they have to be replaced and that gets expensive!

Yup .......... In fact, GM will refuse MAF sensor warranty clams related to over oiling.
