Pulling the trigger, how'd I do?
But, whatever.
The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
I learned a few years back, when I first started investing in real estate, that if you're not embarrassed when you present your first offer, then you've offered too much. I was not prepared to buy a bike that day (not financially speaking, just time constraints and other projects going on right now). My plan was to wait until August or September to purchase, but I happened to be going to a place right down the street from the dealership this past Saturday and thought, what the hell, I'll go make a ridiculously low offer and if they bite, I'll do it now. My first offer was 20k, out the door, which I knew would never be accepted. However, that let them know where I stood. I wasn't going to pay MSRP or anywhere near it. Well, just like I thought he would do, the salesman looked at me as if I just called his mother a *****. Then he came back with a breakdown of what they "normally" sell the bike for and it was somewhere around $26,600 (which I'm sure is total BS). Thus, the games began. Long story short, we ended up with $21,700 OTD. The dealership was closing and I had some things to do, so I went back the next day, signed the paperwork and drove it home.
Now, for those of you wanting me to post the dealer name. After I purchased the bike the salesman told me that he's been trying to buy a SGS and couldn't even get that deal because the dealership didn't want to set a precedent with their employee pricing and he asked me not to tell anyone about the deal I got. This was after I posted on this site. Is he full of it? Possibly, but he's retired military and came off as a pretty good guy, so I'm going to honor his request and not mention it. I don't want to **** anyone off and screw myself out of a good deal on my next bike. With that said, I'm sure that it would take about ten seconds to figure it out yourself if you pay attention to details.
One other tip. I got pre-approved for a loan before I went to the dealership and had the credit union check in hand, so I'm sure that helped to let them know that I was not screwing around. My credit union is at 5.5% right now, and I offered to let the dealer see if they could beat them and they came back at 3.99% through Eaglemark.
To the poster who asked about the breakdown, I will be happy to post the numbers here, but it will probably be tomorrow. Starting a long work day and the paperwork's at home.
