This '14 Road King is my second Harley, first was an '07 Dyna and had no problem finding neutral. From 0-1,000 mi it was nearly impossible to get to neutral lifting up on the front shift peg. For the 1,000 maintenance, I used Redline 42804 Transmission Oil (Shockproof) and it now easily slips into N. I had used this in the previous Dyna for 7 years.
(Just used HD F+ in the primary and Mobil 1 VTwin syn in the engine.)
Don't want to start an oil thread, but I was very skeptical about people who claimed this shifting issue was somehow oil related, but I can really tell the difference in shifting.
I suppose lube can help finding neutral. For me on a few new HD's the clutch adjustment was the biggest factor at the first service. I like 1/2 turn out on the clutch pack screw, and 1/16" at the lever at its tightest when the bars are turned.
Picked up my 2014 RK last Saturday. The saleman said the tranny and primary were serviced with HD Formula+ from the factory. Took it out yesterday on the first ride for 141 miles. Had a bugger of a time at two stop lights going 2nd to neutral and 1st to neutral. Did not have distance to downshit into first before stopping in 2nd gear at both stops. The neutral detent was not there and the tranny kept going into 1st from 2nd and 2nd from 1st. The work around was engage some clutch to roll the rear wheel and then the neutral detent was found.
I had a similar issue with the 2009 SG I traded for the RK. The last two years I used Formula+ in the tranny and primary and the tranny shifted easier and some of the noise was reduced. I will stay on Formula+ and keep in mind the CruiseDrive tranny may not always shift into neutral from 2nd when stopped in 2nd.
Neutral is so hard to find on my SGs I have almost given up.... I now have 1300 miles on the bike. At the 1000 mile service I had harley synthetic filed in the bike... I haven't noticed any difference. I don't even try at a light I just hold the clutch in first gear.... I'll give removing the heal shifter a shot. Thanks for the idea.
