I hate stories like this. There was nothing you could have done and nobody to blame to at least justify why the accident happened. We all have this as a possibility and I try to be careful on every ride but this makes it evident sometimes you have no control of your fate. I was wearing my flow through jacket with armor just yesterday and was thinking? What would this protect if I needed it. Rapid healing to you and your gal.

I know it irritates Forum members when the question is asked "What could have been done different to not have a wreck happen? This is one of the few situations where the rider could not do anything different to prevent it. This post is a good reminder to stay as alert to situations that can be bad and to "dress for success." Glad your both as good as you are.
It appears you were wearing a Shoei J-Cruise. Were you both wearing these helmets? I wear a J-Cruise and am highly impressed with the fit (as is the case with most Shoei's for me). Can you give me your thoughts regarding how the helmet(s) fared and whether you're doing any second-guessing regarding full-face or modular? As much as I love my J-Cruise, I do worry about a face-down get off.
As a safety officer for my HOG chapter I fully support and advocate wear the gear all of the time. You never know when it will happen so you have to dress for the occasion all of the time. The new vented air jackets are very comfortable and in my opinion actually cooler on a hot sunny day than a t shirt. How is that you ask, you don't have the heat from the sun on you all day. They will save your skin from serious rash and if equipped with armor provide impact protection. If you doubt their comfort borrow a good vented jacket and ride with it on for a day and see how you feel at the end of the ride. Most riders that do that change their minds.
Glad you were not injured worse. I agree with this other post. Did dog have collar w/ owners name? I am always amazed at the "animal lovers" who take so little responsibility for the damage their pets cause. If you live in an apartment or condo any pet other than a fish is a potential nuisance to others around you.
Good point, no collar in the photo but maybe the owner can be found and bare some responsibility for letting the dog run loose.
Seems that jacket did just what I thought I polyesther would - melt! I read about that last year and got rid of the HD mesh jacket I had just bought (cooled well though) for that reason. I've been looking around and thought I was onto something when I read about the new Klim Induction jacket that has a proprietary (and supposedly quite tough) mesh until I tried one on at a local shop. Didn't even get it all the way on before the disappointment set in. Elbows felt extremely restrictive and uncomfortable even in a size bigger than I'd wear it didn't feel good - the search goes on.
Hope you get better fast.
Sorry to read of the accident.
Glad you had a helmet because you put that against the highway.
I'm a believer of choice but my choice is to wear a helmet, chaps, gloves and a leather jacket.
Chaps look cool but don't offer any protection for the back half while sliding. Better than plain jeans or shorts and flip flops though. Pretty impressed on how the bike looks after sliding from 65 MPH. My wife, years ago was a passenger in a motorcycle accident that sadly killed the driver. She has ridden a few times since but doesn't enjoy it. Sitting in the middle of a freeway sounds more scary than the accident glad this has turned out well.
Glad your both ok... sounds like under the circumstances, you both had minimal injuries considering how you went down... good gear can minimize your injuries... as uncomfortable as we might think it is, when needed your thankful that its there doing its job... Let the insurance company worry about the bike, focus on you and your girlfriend healing... The bike, no matter how attached you think you are to it, its only a recreational tool...
