Default self adjusting clutch cable

I've read a couple of threads on here about this self adjusting clutch cable, but they are a couple years old. Wondering if anyone has any new info... Mine is driving me crazy. I was fine for 2,500 miles, then suddenly had almost no friction zone. Someone else nailed it when they posted "it was more like an on/off switch". I adjusted the clutch inside the primary and set the cable again. It was fine for a few miles, one aggressive shift and the freeplay at the ferrule went from the width of a nickel to about an inch. I was sure I was going to lose the clutch before getting home, but it somehow righted itself (almost). Now I'm back to the on/off switch with no friction zone. Anybody had any trouble with this thing? find a solution? I'm about to bag it and put an old school adjuster nut on it. Thanks!

Sounds like what my old shovelhead did when the throw out bearing went bad.
