I am having a upshift issue with my 2018 M8 Softail. When upshifting from first to second I get the feel like the shift lever is kicking back during the shift. This doesn't happen every time. But happens about every fifth shift or so. Anybody have any idea what may be causing this?

Well the first to second shift has the largest span of ratios between any of the gears in your transmission. This means the speed matching of your main and countershaft is tougher to get right. The dog rings clash when they are going different speeds and that is probably what you are feeling. If you are too slow or gentle on the shift lever you are encouraging the clashing or grinding or rejecting of the dogs engaging. Your shifts, especially first to second need to be quick and firm. Too much clashing leads to damaged rounded dogs and more missed shifts. That is the reason the most common transmission problem is popping out of second gear. Next on the list is bent shift fork which is somewhat related. Also make sure your clutch is in order.
Thanks for the reply. What you are saying e makes be perfect sense
I do have the clutch adjusted properly so I guess I need to focus on more positive shifts.

Yes, these are beefy transmissions. No need to baby it. You wont hurt it. Think tractor more than motorcycle. Hopefully that solves it. If it still kicks back have the techs look at it under warranty.
Ever notice when downshifting as you're coming to a stop...say you're moving along about 40 and the light in front of you turns red...you don't go straight to 1st in hopes the light turns green before you get there. But as you near the traffic light you shift down from fourth to third...then as you slowly approach you shift to third...then to second...then to first...as you shift to first all of a sudden the bike kinda lunges forward, like the brake was suddenly released? Same issue, in reverse to what you're experiencing.

Sounds to me like you have an improperly adjusted clutch or an improper use of the clutch.

Well I was out riding today and I noticed this kick back of the shift lever when shifting from 1st to 2nd to be more pronounced with aggressive acceleration and shifting at higher rpms. I have the clutch adjusted slightly past 1/2 turn out. Also I had the dealer ride the bike and he said it was normal. Go figure. Any ideas? Oh and BTW the transmission slips into neutral like butter goes in very easily to neutral.
