I have the S&S 2:1 exhaust and removed the silencer piece and baffle packing...but I feel it’s not loud enough. I’m in California so it has a removable Catalyst...if I remove the whole thing will it be Beneficial as far as back pressure or should I leave it alone...
For best performance leave all the pieces in it (the packing is optional).
This is true, the M8 needs backpressure. If you want better performance and a better sound go stage 2. I run the same pipe on my 114 Fat Bob, when I went stage 2 (CR480 cam) the sound got louder and deeper. It still doesn't sound like my high compression twin cam with the rush wrath pipe or a shovel with drag pipes but sounds decent when I twist the throttle. I plan to go with an SnS big bore kit over the winter, 128" should give more sound and power
Yah nothing beats the sound of the twin cam....is the stage 2 worth it? I mean this bike has crazy power stock, I ride everyday and want to keep the reliability
Also I saw the Dyno numbers of the pipe...even the race pipe version does not have the mid torque this pipe has
My race pipe makes my bike 109/131 with 110 at 2200 RPM's and 130 at 3000 - with a good cam. When I had the street legal version it didn't come close to that. I do have the DB reducer installed for the necessary back pressure. Having had both the race is far superior.
Ugg... it’s a hard decision between being heard and performance... I split lanes going and returning from work every day, so I average like 35 mph, being heard is prob a top concern, I ran the bike with no catalyst core and it was crazy loud, decisions decisions
It’s nice to have ALL the power, but that said...these things make enough power you can sacrifice a little if it makes you happy in other ways.
My ‘09 Dyna is just a good stage 1 and I love it. My M8 would leave it in the dust, but I’m just as happy on both for different reasons. If you are really feeling the itch for sound, I say go for it. If you miss the power you cabbaa alway go back to it.

The race version of the S&S has only a DB reducer installed, I didn't remove my DB reducer so I can't remark about baffle packing. There's enough noise level there for me, seemed to increase after time.
I have the same pipe on my Slim w/stage 1....
It has plenty of power, And I like the sound....Rev it up and the car's will move....
As mentioned above, It was designed to run best as is....
