Default M8 Softail VS Dynas

Hey what’s up guys. I don’t really post much to just talk about stuff, it’s usually when I have a problem but I want to change that and just have a discussion. So my history with Harley is my first bike ever was an Evo Sportster, loved iynlike crazy but when it died I moved on to bigger. I got the 2018 Street bob. I never owned a twin cam so I have no idea how to compare it but I loved that bike. Did the whole “club” style to it. I really did love that bike. A couple days ago I had a super bad accident. Almost died but here I am. I went straight through an intersection when I had the green but a large van cut across on his red light and I clipped the rear, went straight into him at 40. Now my bike is totaled, I’m in the healing process but I’m already planning my next bike. I gap GAP on the street bob which would help me get another new bike, I. Really digging the sport glide. It just looks like it wants to eat miles. Obviously I would change stuff immediately like T bars maybe a new fairing but most people switch that stuff. I’m also thinking of a Dyna because I’m super curious about them. I would also be saving money by just buying an older Dyna but I’m not sure what years and models are the ones to go after, I need some input so please send me some comments.

Glad to here that you are on the mend.
I am currently on a 2019 Sport Glide. Before it, a 2009 E Glide Classic and before that a 2007 Dyna Low Rider.
I loved the Dyna and missed it for the entire 10 years that I rode the touring bike. I wanted to ride every state and the E Glide made it easier to meet that goal.
The Sport Glide that I am on now is set up like I had the Dyna, Bags and a windshield. No comparison! The Sport Glide has more power, more torque, smoother motor, handles better, better brakes, I could go on.

Seriously glad you survived to ride another day. I know what it’s like to lose a bike you loved in an accident. I lost the bike in my signature last year to a careless driver after having it for over 25 years. I suffered five broken ribs, a fractured C7 vertebrae and a separated left shoulder which is now held together with a cable and a tendon from a cadaver.

Sorry I can’t help you with your Dyna vs. Softail question as I have no experience with Dynas. Hope you heal quickly. Better days are coming.

Really sorry about your accident. Totally sucks. Only hope you have a full recovery, and that the other party's insurance pays for ALL your medical bills AND a new bike.

I like jimsreddyna's response quite a lot. The smaller M8 Softails like the Low Rider. Slim, Street Bob, and Sport Glide remind me of the Dyna in all the good ways, but are much more taut and have MUCH better engines (run cooler, better power, higher potential)

Much as I love my Dyna, you'd better count on working on the engine mounting (e.g., True Track) - they get downright dangerous as their motor mounts wear - look up "Harley death wobble", it's no joke with the Dynas (and even some of the touring rigs. Older Dynas (pre 2007) have concerns about the cam chain tensioners, so be on the lookout for that. The later ones with bigger engines and fuel injection run seriously hot. And if you want the newer Dynas, don't expect a huge discount.

My 2003 Dyna is a great bike - love it. But I bought the 2019 Low Rider because I'd just be throwing too much money into the old bike to make it into what I want.

Again, best wishes for your recovery.

Glad you're alive to tell this story. I just traded in a Dyna Wide Glide for a 2020 Sport Glide, and the difference is night and day. The Sport Glide is my fourth cruiser/street bike and is by far the most powerful, maneuverable, and nimble bike of them all. I literally smile each time I'm on it. There is no comparison, however, in that "Harley" sound. The new M8 engine just doesn't hold a candle to the older bikes as it just doesn't sound like a Harley. I'm trying to "embrace the change" and get over that, but it's difficult. If you don't care about that (many don't), then go for the M8, hands down. If you do care about it, then that makes your choice more difficult. Get well soon!

Glad to hear you made it through!

I had a Sport Glide for less than a year. I couldn’t get past the lean angle, it would scrape just looking at corners. Honestly, I don’t know how Breakout or Fat Boy owners do it Other than the angle, it was an awesome bike. If that doesn’t bother you, then by all means get it, you are going to love it. It eats miles, and if you wear a FF helmet, you might find the fairing perfect - takes pressure off the chest but leaves clean air for the helmet. There is no comparison to a Dyna, it is better in every aspect except sound.

Thank you all for the good wishes. The thing about the sportglide is I think the FXRT fairing would look amazing on that bike. Just like Laidlaws Coast glide, that’s exactly how I would do

I have a 19 Sport Glide and am impressed with it. Motor brakes suspension & frame way better than pre 18s. I'm going more the Dyna club style with it. There are some shields out that fit the factory fairing much like many club style Dynas. I plan to add T bars, an engine guard, a Herritage rear spring to get the rear up an 1" probably even a spacer. I think this should help with ground clearance for more learn before scrape. Some mid pegs but I may not move the controls but rather just add heel shiftier. Black exhaust, AC, transmission cover, hand guards & Corbin seat. maybe rear bungs and a proper license plate set up. I didn't do a pipe like the two brothers racing but rather the S&S 2-1 Streetmaster. Its way shorter than the stocker but still longer than the TBR pipe and a different sound. I am kind of mixed about it but with the stage 3 kit cam and bump in compression it at least sounds righteous H-D. Any ideas on further or better club style set up for this bike?

fwiw I did change the gearing from a 2.79 final drive ratio to a 3.15 and the bike dynoed 116 HP 116 TQ.

Here is a Slipstream on Mooses's bike and a Gustafsson on the black bike.

I've had several dynas, but the new softails are better in almost every way. The obvious dynas that are most sought after are the fxdx, fxdxt fxdp etc. I'd say avoid the 09 street bobs (might be other years too), but they had weird top triple trees to where you can't mount t bars without swapping the triple. 06 and up got the bigger forks and the dynas got fatter. 6 speeds are nice, but carb'd bikes will always sound the best.

I think it's really up to you on how much money you want invested. If my softail got totaled, I'd probably just buy a cheaper used dyna again. Good luck.
