Default 2020 Sport Glide screen issues - *resolved*

Hi All,

Have a 2020 Sport Glide in performance Orange - my first Harley ever after 40 years of riding. My last 4 bikes in order were Triumph Rocket Roadster, Yamaha FJR, Aprilia Tuono, Z1000SX and now the SG.

Got to say I am really enjoying my lazy boy bike Very relaxing and though not fast, spirited enough to keep me happy (it has the Stage 1 (opened up pipe etc). I would like a little more front brake, but its not bad.

My last ride was 5000km so I got to know it pretty well. My only issue was higher speed riding and wind blast.

So I purchased a 12 inch screen - I was looking through it a little, I do not like this. I chopped it down to just looking over the top. It was terrible the wind buffeting!

I slowly chopped it down and down till I got down to about 5 inches - best I figured and on my 5000km journey (Burt Monroe rally, bottom of New Zealand).

It was but the noise in my helmet!

After getting back did a 1500km and 1/2 way through i removed the screen altogether. Oh wow, it was beautiful - silent clean air to my helmet, it was an absolute pleasure - but anything above 90kph the wind on your chest etc just gets annoying - 140kph, forget it.

So I looked at another brand Slip Streamer. I purchased the 8”, 0” & 12”. Results:

12” buffeting – not good. 10” wind straight in my eyes – OK with the visor down, but the same wind noise experienced before.

8” wind off the eyes but still noisy and buffeting and just not good.

So being in the car racing scene for many years started looking at that mysterious topic of high/low pressure air issues etc. So I designed a wind spoiler/defector. After many rides and testing (as I don’t have wind tunnel) 😊 the results are amazing.

Im now running the 10” screen, can look over it fine. No deflector – wind in your eyes, add the deflector wing – up to 100kph NO wind, amazing. Helmet is quiet, no wind on my chest.

Ill upload a pic of it later – its from my 3D printer so not what you call a production piece. I would be interested to send a couple to whomever – but someone that has gone through screens and knows the issues they are having, so one can do a controlled test 😊
Thanks

Me too. I’m running the 10” Slipstream myself.

Me too. Aside from that may I enquire as to your height? I easily look over my 15" Gustafson but I am tall at 6'4. Also I have a stock seat whereas you have an aftermarket if that matters.

I am running a 10 inch smoked Slipstream too, and get a bit of buffering at 70/80 mph but like the look of it.

I have a 15" Gustafson. I honestly don't think I get any over or around the windshield. The only issue I have is buffeting coming up the tanks. I can stop it with a strategically placed arm across the stomach/chest. But I think the windshield is doing it's job really well. I haven't tested at ludicrous speed, but it does well up to about 80 - albeit with the tank buffeting coming in *which is rather annoying*. I think it is @HuntWhenever and someone else that did little lexan wings on their fairing to help cut down on that.

The arm across the chest thing describes it perfectly.

The air deflectors I made cut some of it down. I have a plan to make a couple more and mount to the engine guard. I haven't had any spare time in the shop at work due to COVID19, so fabrication is on hold temporarily.
