Here is the official word on the subject. Apparently some customers "may not realize that all engines have some normal rate of oil consumption". Some more, some less.

Seems to me like they're giving themselves an easy out with this overly broad decree. Do other bike manufacturers come out with this generic excuse?

Here's the rest of TT461 if you're interested:

https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...24214-9999.pdf

There's a check that requires removing the crankshaft position sensor (CKP) to see how much oil drains out, but since my bike is still under warranty, I'm not sure that's something I should be doing.

Hmm...I don't know what I'm going to do.

I know. I know. Take it to the dealer and get it documented, and let them decide what the next step should be. I get that and, in the end, unless something changes, that’s what I plan on doing.

It’s just that, one, I hate dealers, especially the dealer where I bought the bike and, two, I’ve been an HVAC/R technician for close to 40 years, so I’m used to diagnosing issues and figuring out solutions on my own. Rarely do I depend on technical support. I’ve been the same way with my bikes. Right now, I’m not absolutely sure I have an issue or not, especially since I started this thread and new information has come to light.

I’ll ponder and reach a decision eventually. Y’all carry on. I’ll report back if I have anything that’s worth reporting.

There is no reason to take it to the dealer, you don`t even know if the engine is using oil yet and you are going off the deep end.

Take a deep breath...

Check your oil the same way each time, level should be halfway up the markings, hot, after idling 2 minutes (straight up or jiffystand, just do it the same each check).

Once the level is set, leave it alone.

Check it again in 500- 1,000 miles.

Even auto manufacturers will tell you the same thing.

You may have just been lucky. I had three motors in my Evo Softail during the time I had it. I changed oil every 2,500 miles and oil consumption averaged around 8-12 oz. in 2,500 miles. It varied depending on how hot the weather was and how hard I ran the bike.

So far, my M-8 seems to be in the same ballpark.
