Default Riding with tinnitus

Went for nice ride today with foam ear plugs in and they worked great at blocking noise and allow me to hear my music with with my Cardo.. Problem is my tinnitus volume was greatly increased to a point of causing a headache. Anyone have a solution where I can ride comfortably and still have some tunes playing in the background.

Beautiful Heritage you have. My tinnitus never goes away, so I do everything I can to not make it worse. Interestingly, I get less wind noise with a half helmet than a full helmet.

I've not tried one, but there was a test in a UK magazine (Ride) about a year ago, the quietest helmet was a Schuberth full face. It was all set up for bluetooth. Not cheap, but quality.

Have you tried riding with ear buds? Doubles as ear protection and waaaayyy better sounding music while on the freeway. Not sure how the tinnitus would act up. If I'm ever planning on being my bike longer than a ride across town I run them to keep the road noise down.

I use ear plugs made for musicians or concert goers that reduce the level of sound without distorting the frequency response. They are available at different noise reduction levels. I use a -15 dB pair. I got them from an audiologist.

Most m/c specific ear plugs are -25db or thereabouts. Not sure -15db does what's needed long term? The other thing I noticed is it is a lot quieter if your head is in undisturbed airflow. The loudest (wind noise) I ever experienced was with a stock Harley windshield on a softail. I tried tall and short and went without in the end.

My windshield is working well to reduce wind noise and I can see over it easily. I'm wearing a Schuberth helmet that's over my ears as well, so I find that -15 dB is adequate and I can still hear enough for awareness and safety. A sound that is -15 dB quieter has 31.6 times less power or intensity. If you have really loud pipes and are riding at high speed all day you may need to go to -25 dB. I have a pair of those too.

A couple of years ago, my E.N.T. prescribed ear filters that were covered by insurance. Immediate relief. As stated above, my Heritage has a shield and I ride with a FF. I still use the filters on long rides and haven't had an issue

Any in helmet sound system is bad for your ears. The sound level is directly into the ear canal rather than normal sound is gathered or filtered by distance. I'm an old carpenter with tinnitus and cut out the music years ago and always keep factory exhaust. Protect what you have left or you won't even have that someday.
