Default Problem shifting up OR down

Hi guys,

Currently on a big tour and I’m running into a problem.

When I shift down, my shift lever no longer moves back up into the “neutral” position. Same thing when I shift up. So to change more than one gear, I have to move it every time with my foot back to the neutral position.

Before I left I checked my tranny fluid. This is good. Do you guys know what is going on ?

Unless I imagined it, I was having an issue with that this past week on my 20 low rider. Did a fluid change yesterday and everything is working as it should now. I was missing shifts because of it, but still not sure if it was a mental problem or not

You’re right! The nice surface finish has all rusted off.

You do know you’re supposed to grease those occasionally, right? Another place the MoCo should have put a grease fitting but managed to save a whole 39 cents by omitting it.

I did not! You can’t really grease I properly without taking it apart though.

I understand the previous revision of this had a grease nipple and a bronze bushing? This one has a plastic bushing ie. no maintenance (?)

Im going to drill and tap this to put a grease fitting. And I guess buy a new shifter linkage if I can make that surface finish right again.

Although the touring bikes had a grease fitting for the shifter, the Softails never did to the best of my knowledge. I always removed the shift levers, pulled the shaft out as far as it would go and applied grease at every 5,000 mile service.

i’m of the old school that says “if it moves, lubricate it.” I thought that was what I was supposed to do.

That is sound logic. Yeah I’ll have to consult my manual for the greasing points. I haven’t been greasing anything, i thought the points would be greased during the services I had paid for!
