I have a 2020 Softail Heritage Classic with the 107 motor. I put some S&S slash cut slip-ons on the bike. The deceleration noise and whenever I shift sounds terrible, It sounds like a Diesel truck that is engine braking when I decel. When shifting it lets out a loud buzzing growl from the decel noise that is loder than my acceleration noise. My 1998 Honda Shadow Ace sounded so much better than My newer Harley. I bought a V&H FP4 to try and change the tuning but it doesn't seem to do anything at all. Probably wasted money getting that since it doesn't change anything that I can detect. The V&H tech told me the M8's just do that. That can't be true, it sounds like ****.
Any advice on how to clean up the sound on this beast, It rides better than the old Honda and has more power and torque but sounds like crap.
I live in the Peoples Republic of California, I am not sure if such a modification is legal. Loud pipes are not, most tuners are not. To get these parts I need to ship it to other parts of the country have it re-boxed and sent to me. I am going to try and fix this annoying sound for a few months and if unsuccessful sell the bike and find something else(it is that bad). Not sure what else to do, I bought it for the enjoyment but not enjoying the sound at all.
I have a pair of those slip-on mufflers and the sound you hear is normal. I had my stock mufflers modified by American custom. I like the sound much better, not quite as loud and way less bark on deceleration.
My Neighbor Haters sound pretty good. I like decel pop
Pretty sure probably just your exhaust. If it's just normal decel pop mostly that you hear, the tuner should be able to limit or stop that, check around for specific instruction on reducing decel pop with the FP4.
Maybe you don't have a real good fit on the slip-ons and a leak is giving a noise, something to look into.

Can you post a video?
Thanks, that is helpful. I was thinking about taking it to the dyno tuning folk up the street and see if they could help. I have had a V-Twin for the last 15 years and decel pop is fine, that incredibly loud growl / buzz is not normal. I have listened to every Harley that drives by and none of them seem to have this noise. I am going to check for leaks and such that makes sense.
Putting on louder pipes is hard in California, they won't let those be shipped here because of the bureau has prohibited them on vehicles as well as most tuners.
I get a lot of decel sound, but I like it. The buzz sound you describe makes me wonder if something on your exhaust is loose - heat shield or something that is rattling or vibrating on decel.
