Default HD Engineers have mechanic experience?

I have a 2021 FLSB. Either the engineers don't read the shop manual or they don't intend that you work on your own bike. The Molex MX150 connector instructions are absolutely brain dead. I found the Molex instructions that are very clear but it appears that HD has a custom version of these connectors. Even worse is the location of of the connectors for the O2 sensors which are absolutely brain dead. Hmmmm... maybe this is an example of why they discontinued the best handling bike in HD history?

What does Buell have to do with this?

You mean brain dead design applies to more than one model and even beyond the base brands?

The Technical Editor's of the service manuals are often to blame for the, er, "interesting" descriptions and mistakes therein.

Very rarely are vehicles of any type made with future service in consideration. Saab is about the only exception to that I am aware of that did this.

saab made cars. and now they make weapons such as rocket launchers and modular killing toools. interesting.

wonder that harley would make if they started making things like HIMARs or carl gustav type rockets. 2024 M8 HARLEY MODULAR ROCKET LAUNCHER...AND ITS CAMMED.!!!

I don't think that many consider a Buell a Harley for that very reason.

Technical writers might have mechanical experience. They acquire a limited mechanical understanding over time. They may or may not be an engineer.

But, most usually professional engineers, fresh out of college and in their first engineering position will jump into machining, assembly, electrical, and all sorts of technical areas to gain real-world experience. It depends upon their college degree. I have worked with young engineers who have their degree in physics who spent quite a bit of "hands-on" time in production. An engineer will most likely, over time, be able to give information far beyond what a mechanic might imagine.

Engineers will write extensive instructions but most usually a technical writer will prepare for publication for the product service and owner manual. The reason for the need of technical writers is that the advanced understanding of the engineers most usually does not include a skill of communication.

But, Harley-Davidson may do it differently.

Comparing my ‘19 Heritage to my ‘94 Heritage I’d say that Harley-Davidson doesn’t want you to work on these newer bikes at all. It seems like they’ve deliberately made even the simplest task an exercise in utter frustration.

Common complaint that people have been making for decades, about bikes, cars, refrigerators, It's really just a simple matter of government overreach and manufacturing constraints. There are 10lb of advanced engineering stuffed in a 5lb sack in the new bikes. The government wants it green and quiet, the MoCo knows it needs to sound like a Harley, those are conflicting goals that lead to engineering compromises. Then the designers get involved and need to make it look like a Harley and the engineers can only do so much because they're already answering to the other two masters. And to top that all off the financial guys get in the mix and give them a budget for R&D and a profit margin that they need to hit when the bike is actually sold. I'm sure somewhere along the line it's someone's job to measure ease of maintenance, but that is likely a very low priority.

With regard to the shop manual, I'm a software architect and I've worked with tech writers for 35 years and can tell you by and large they know how to write and nothing else. They can talk the talk for sure, they have to, but they cannot walk the walk. In their defense however, they can't know what they don't know. The information that gets published is what's given to them by engineering, it's not like they're out crawling around a bike and writing things down. The more you use the manual you'll see how many errors it contains.
