Default Left Side Gas Cap

Does anyone know of any ideas for the left side fake gas cap? I bought the flush mount gas cap kit for my ‘21 FXLRS but the right side / real gas cap has given me problems for quite a while. For starters, the adhesive has seemed to leak out around the edges of the trim ring. And now the gas cap itself now protrudes slightly higher than the trim ring.

I would like to just use the stock gas cap but I don’t like the left side cap at all. I wish the tank was just rounded like the new models but it has a recess. Any suggestions would be great.

The flush mount caps from Harley are not very good. If the left one is staying on and you're OK with the look, you can purchase flush mount caps that work better than the one the dealer sells. Be careful if you purchase one on Amazon, I bought one there that did not fit. It was really inexpensive though. I think a good one will run you about $45.

On my Sport Glide I modified a cap for the left side. I'm not sure how mechanically inclined you are, but it wasn't too hard to take the attaching hardware off the stock cap and put it on the cap I wanted to use.

This is what came out of the stock left side cap.

This is what the underside of the aftermarket cap looked like before modification.

This is the top of the aftermarket cap.

When I took the center screw out of the aftermarket cap this is what was there. I then removed the three Phillips head screws and removed what they were holding.

I then fitted the guts from the stock cap and attached it with the three Phillips screws

It did have to be trimmed to fit in the aftermarket cap.

When I was finished this what it looked like.

If you just want to get rid of the indentation, take the tank off and take it to a painter that does body work. They can fill the indent and repaint it. Or you can get a new late model tank without the indent. They run about $800 primed, not painted. I'm sure if you talk to the dealer they can get one that is painted. It just depends what it is worth to you to get rid of the left cap. It may be the best route would be to buy a bike that only has one cap. That started in 2022.

Thanks for the reply. I thought about trying an aftermarket gas cap but didn’t know if it was a good idea. You always hear stuff about how they need to vent properly but idk if that’s true. Idk if I wanna mess with my tank but I may try making some type of cover for that indentation. It’d be cool if I could make something that just filled the spot and was flush with the tank but idk if I’m that mechanically inclined. Surprised no one makes that.
