Default softail tire mileage?

Hey there,

I think it's the nature of my riding style, whatever that is, but I don't get much tire mileage. I'm reading crazy mileage reports from some folks and was curious your riding/braking style and typical tire mileages. I strictly run ME888's because they are very confidence-inspiring even in heavy rain for me personally. I used to run the ME880's and have tried many other brands over the years on numerous bikes which were all heavy cruisers. No matter the bike or tire, I usually only get ~5-6k out of a rear, and ~8-12k out of a front. Usually the lower side of those figures. I only run the tires to the wear bars, never past. I like to throttle pretty hard on take-off and upshifts which likely explains the rear mileage and I 99% ride winding country roads. Pressure are 40-42 rear and 38-40 front at Metzler's recommendation. I don't feel like I use the brakes excessively and don't downshift until I've slowed enough to make a smooth shift.

I have a 19 FLHC.

I'm about the same if not less, I'm using Metzeler Cruisetec's which are stickier than the 888's

Oem rear started cracking around 6800 miles, it was almost time for a new one anyway. Put on an American elite, only have 2500 on it so far, quite happy with it. Front oem should last to around 13k.

Nice! How do you like the cruisetec in comparison with the 888? I've been wanting to try those. What are the features/characteristics that are different from the 888? Thanks!

The cruisetec's seem to both stick well and handle better than the 888 with similar mileage, I haven't done much wet riding though

Fat Boy
Tire is smoked under 5000

Heritage can go 14000+ ( if I'm lucky)

I run Shinko tires because they’re super sticky.

I recently put on Shinko long hauls. They’re supposed to last longer but I doubt I’ll get more than maybe 4-5k out of them. I do love the tires though so I don’t mind changing them out

I’ve heard Michelin commanders have pretty long life in them but may be a little slippery for some people with a light bike/rider

Presently using Dunlop Elite 4's on cast rims, (tubeless), they have 12,000 miles on them and the rear appears to be good for another 5,000 miles.

I have also tried numerous brands on my previous Harleys and have for the last few years favoured Dunlops because of their stiffer sidewall which may help me keep control if the tire goes flat. I find the Elites are exceptionally good in the rain and their dual compound gives the tire good longevity.

For reference I ride solo, weight 205 naked, and sit further back with my Daddy Long Legs seat, (6'4"). All of my riding is on secondary roads and where I live I do not see the extreme heat that others experience in the south

It's been quite a number of years since I ran a Shinko - maybe I should try again! I rarely get more than 5k out of a rear and 8k out of a front. My bike and I are both light relatively speaking. I'm about 150lbs 5'10" and the Heritage is what, 730lbs? I desire traction in wet and dry over tire longevity but would prefer a little more mileage if possible.
