I’m installing a new freedom exhaust. I put in new Harley exhaust gaskets. They seem to be too large for the new headers. They fit the factory pipes fine but i having trouble even getting the nuts back on the studs. Any thoughts on my problem. Maybe different gaskets.
Are you sure you got all of the old gasket out? Sometimes it is had to see that you removed all of the old gasket. Use a pick and dig around a little to make sure all of it is out.
Or reuse the old ones. I've lost count how many times I've reused exhaust gaskets. Just make sure to loosely install everything, then start firming up the fasteners starting at the head and work your way down.
are you sure you have the right style gaskets? theres two styles and the one you use depends on the flange style of your pipe. theres flat and tapered. put up a pic of your pipe and ill tell you which ones to use. you probably need the flat screamin eagle gaskets part # 17048-98.
those would be flat style, thats why they wont install. the factory taper style is too deep. go get that part number i provided from harley and swap the gaskets out and she will go in perfectly!
Something I found helpful too, a large socket the same or a shade smaller diameter of the gasket. Makes inserting them fully and even real fast and easy. I cant remember the size off the top of my head, but some auto stores might rent out a kit of axle sockets, one would be the perfect size.
