Default 6k Service

Hi fellas,
Bought my first HD last year and loving the bike, 2024 Hydra Glide.

I can do most of my service in the future but seems like a good idea to have the dealer do it as I have one more year of warranty. $600. Seems high but there’s a good list of things they check and adjust, so I’m okay with that.

What’s the advice on this?

I’m retired and don’t mind someone else working on bike.seems like a good group of people.

I would ask them for the list of things they're going to do vs what is in the owners manual, I bet the lists aren't the same.

You're going to pay $600 to have the lowest skilled/cheapest tech in their shop "work" on your bike...I wouldn't do it.

Thanks, and I fear you’re correct. And I’ll get out the manual and compare w their list.

Well, did you have them do the 1000k service? How did it go? I thought that was important, but couldn't get myself to do it. At 6000... Well, I did 5000.... That's normal maintenance 3 holes.

I just got done doing a crap ton of work, and ya... That's like actual work. Didn't used to be. If you've changed enough oil, and don't mind paying others to do it... I can't really blame you. Although I always look at what else I'd rather spend the money on... And paying labor rarely wins.

I understand. I'm at the age where crawling around on the concrete is a bit of a bitch. I have cancer treatments and my fatigue make any job three time as long.
Yes, Had them do the 1k service and went fine. Another dealer is a little bit cheaper on the 5K. I have five bikes so I change oil once in a while, so, I
might get under the bike and see what needs to be done. No time like the present to just get in the routine.
Thanks,
m

Wow... Can't imagine. I put some cams in. Tore the trike apart. It's not like it was a weekend. When I was finally done, it sucked to admit I was wore out.

I had to take my one to an indy cause a bearing came apart. I wasn't going to do that work. Found a really great indy as a bonus... But when I got that back... And I got done with everything... Sort of wondered how much wrenching I want to do in the future.

Well hell, it was a beautiful day here and a beautiful ride, you GET to have treatment and figure out how to maintain 5 bikes, and I GET to bitch about getting old... Life is good!!! I 😉

If nothing is wrong with your bike do it yourself. Just use a good brand of synthetic oil and a new filter. Also keep records and recites

No advice for you, only you know whether or not you can do the work. I'm retired too, 68 years old for a couple more days, and I do all of my own work on both of my bikes - including tires changes - so old people can doo this stuff too. We're smarter. 😉

I've attached a PDF of the maintenance checklist for you. You'll see that there are many items on the list, but none of them require any special skills.

If you are worried about warranty buy the fluids there and save receipt. You do not have to have the warranty work done at dealer, they say it must be documented. If you are really worried print up a sheet and date, or such. I have spreadsheet. But like anything it could be faked.

My guess any warranty work will have nothing to do with wether you changed oil, checked belt tension, or replaced plugs. But I would ask what they are doing, is it just an oil change or are they going through and checking critical fasteners, plugs, checking belt, adjusting clutch if cable.

Myself, I still change all fluids at 1k mile, actually sooner myself for break in, and then every 5k. I don't extend the tranny or primary like newer specs call for.
