Over the last couple years several folks have asked about the mudBags.
Currently, Delmarksman is sending me a set of 40mm Grenade cans for me to prep for him.
I will modify to a sloped front, then he is going to execute the mounting apparatus....
Friend of mine sells junk, and I saw a pile of these cans in his *store* - Southern Treasure Hunters.
I asked about them and he said - why, you want one??
I said no. I want two. So he told me to take them
Set them on the floor of my shop and was stepping over them for about a week.
Finally, one day I was stepping over, looked down, and said - saddle bags............

I didn't snap a shot of the cardboard pattern, but that's the first step.
My cans are shown below in the early stage of the operation.
These cans are 14" long, 10 1/2" deep, and about 3 1/4 wide.
I like the compact size, they hang out just a cunnthair beyond the shocks.
Each can will hold about five beers and a sandwich, if you squash the sandwich down.

Here below in the first picture you see I welded on a tab to accomodate a locking device.
Also you see one of the hangers and quick release bolts that insure the cans stay where they belong.

. First off the bat, I made a scaled drawing to establish where exactly to amputate.
Ideally the Grenade Can will align with the shock,
and horizontal to the ground.

I like a thin cutting wheel mounted on my high speed die grinder.

. Here next, I like to recycle old computer cases for this sort of operation.
They are usually made of some pretty nice steel.

. I marked off and harvested a shunk large enough to seal off both cans,
so I can perform the folding operation, (for both pieces), all at once. .

Clamp the piece at your Anvil Station,
and start the bending with your DuckBills.

That determination will be made in Delaware
after the mounts and positioning is clarified.

Ya done good. Funny thing is that I was looking at your setup and grabbed a couple of ammo cans I have laying around to see how they would out work on my Softail. I understand 'you' have to cut them to allow for the shock on a Dyna and all, but I couldn't figure out why you put the cut them at the latch end.
It took me a couiple of minutes to realize that the measurements didn't match up to the ones I have (M-60, 7.62mm and M-61, 20mm). Mine are shorter overall (the 20mm might be a bit wider though) and only have a single latch at one end.
Now I'm going to have to look around for a 40mm can to check out how it would fit on my Softail.
Again, another great job.

The welding went pretty well, my old eyeBalls have a hard time nowadaze.
The machine is wire feed, Lincoln 125 Plus. Takes care of my needs.
When I have need for HeliArc quality I visit a friend and use his machine.
