So I'm going to be installing my system later this week. I always read on here about people using Pandora and other music apps on their phone. My question is, doesn't this eat up your monthly data on your phone bill? Please forgive me if this is a stupid question but I simply don't know.

No Sir! The app is free unless you want to upgrade to commercial free music. . which cost $4.99 a month.

Gann - he is asking about data usage...
all depends on how much you use it...
I like spotify, although not free on the phone. cool thing is you can download the playlists on your own wifi network and play offline (no 3G/4G connection needed). also putting mp3's on your mobile will work - that's "free".
now keep in mind most newer HU's will have a better control over Pandora, but with the limited visibility on the HU, I think you are putting yourself at risk while driving (and changing stations). HU WILL play other music thru BT...

Damit Man!! Data Usage?? I can play Pandora for a week straight and not use very much data?? Never even entered my mind that data was an issue. It dam sure doesn't use very much.. . .LOL. On a serious note like AAWAV said if you use Spotify and download offline data usage is not a problem.
Thanks for the info again guys. I guess I was thinking that streaming music through my phone would eat up my data. Of course I wouldn't do it all the time, but I'm sure I'll try it some.
Your carrier should have a breakdown of your data usage by month and by type (whether 3G or 4G). Check your usage history; then consider how long you expect to be streaming...or stream for what you "expect" your usual rides might be, then check that on your account in a couple weeks. That should be a decent gauge for you. Also, some carriers give you a sort of "planning tool" that shows if you stream Pandora for X hours a day, you'll use Y amount of data.
I am pretty sure Pandora/Spotify and the like aren't TOO bad on your usage. It's streaming Netflix or Hulu that can eat your data plan quickly.
OR, as others have said, if you're on T-Mobile or Sprint, just stream as much as you like; they both offer unlimited data (though I think T-Mobile throttles your data after a certain point). For me, it's a matter of getting signal all the time with Sprint, but they HAVE improved around here (upstate NY- the Capital District).
I use Slacker, which allows you to cache music much like Spotify, and it works with Bluetooth through my Sony HU, I pay $5 a month. The library is a little limited, so I might switch to Spotify for $10 a month, not sure if it works the same with the HU/hand controls (skip songs, display title).
