Default Inside/Outside pod mounting

I give up. Poured through these forums but I'm still not getting it...call me a Polak. Oh wait, I am one...crap!! Call me something then but can someone point me to a thread that has pics showing an "outside" the pod mounting of speakers or explain this to me in plain english? I have a '15 Ultral Low with the audio upgrade to 6.5 and I want to install a set of Kappas in the fairing and rear pods.

Inside the pod...

Outside the pod...

Inside or outside the pod refers to the speaker pod in the fairing, not the rear pods.

I was just posting about this in another thread. Did you find any noticeable difference between the two mounting options? What did you gain or lose with each option? Any idea what causes the difference in sound?

Default Pod mod

This is just an FYI.... but I put together a video showing how to modify the pods for internal mounting....

In a short and typically (for me) SA answer, sound waves. Slightly longer answer (but still not going into the long drawn out one, seesaw likes to write long ones) the rear of the speaker also emits frequencies and pressures, these bounce off of surroundings and then come back into contact with the speaker which at this time is trying to emit a different set of frequencies and all of this bouncing around doesn't really set very well with the speaker. The difference is the amount of time, surrounding structures, material of the structures, shape of the structures, I could go on and on, but I am done.

Maybe this helps, I am not sure.

I just read your other reply to the other thread here, and now, if the sound difference you are speaking of, is the difference that the above mounting styles would make, then it is still the same principle as I said above, but I would have to see the exact speaker and see the difference with that speaker installed both ways, because you still will have a difference, I just am not sure that some speakers would give a discerning sound difference to the operator, unless other things are involved, and this can only be seen or determined with the actual speaker and the pod.

Posted in another thread so I thought I would post here as well....

If I had to guess its that the supporting trim of the speaker when installed outside the pod is more fully in contact with the pod (flat pod surface to flat speaker ring) vs. the 4 contact points of the pod mounts and the thin edge of the inside of the pod.

More contact/support = better speaker response?

For me, inside of the pod resulted in speaker muffle above 3/4 volume. Outside mounting resulted in no speaker distortion to full volume.

Just my 2-cents

That makes sense and seems to be inline with what Copyless was saying. It also might explain why the KRC Focal speakers seem to be less affected than the Kappa's. Not saying the extra cost means anything, but the Focal's have a very sturdy frame that seems to be some kind of graphite or composite. Maybe they have less resonance even with minimal support.

To me outside sounded a little better, but I also put in fiberfill when I went outside so that may have had something to do with it. Also, when I had them inside, I cut off the white bosses around the opening so the speaker would sit flat against the pod, probably helped some there too. If I had to do it over I would go outside, but I wouldn't bother changing them if they were already inside (and mounted flush).

I cut the stands off the inside as well. But the inside edge is like a knife edge, very thin. So I don't think you get the same contact surface inside as mounting them on the outside. I can't see what else could cause the difference.
