Last winter I changed out my stereo in my 11 Ultra Classic.
I installed a Kenwood KDC-BT3118U head unit, PN4.520D SOUNDSTREAM 4CH AMP PICASSO amp and a pair of Pioneer 6.5" speakers in the fairing and a Biketronics Retro radio kit. (Removed tour pack and lowers so no speakers there)
In the driveway it cranks pretty good. I find that Pandora radio sounds much better than iTunes songs from my playlists.
When I ride it takes a huge turn for the worse. I have to turn it up when I start riding so high that it distorts and sounds horrible. I told my wife I am about ready to trade bike in and get another Road King just so I am not tempted to listen to music. About 15 minutes into riding I end up turning it off because it just annoys me.
As crazy as it sounds the stock stereo with boom speakers sounded tons better.
I know the setup is correct and wired properly as I consulted someone with knowledge on the subject during install.
So what do I need to do to get a decent sound when I am riding? New Speakers? 6X9's in lids?
I dont know a lot about this stuff but my guess is the speakers because i have that amp in my bike pushing biketronic 7.1s and it sounds good...hopefully not as good as its going to sound if i ever get the time to install my 1000d..also before the audio big shots(thats a compliment)come around u might want to list what model your speakers are
Your not far from a great system. First question is how much do you want to spend?!?
I've had the pioneer 6.5's and wasn't a fan of them. You are right the distort quick.
Firsts I'd swap out amos to the newer sound stream PN41000D. Then depending on the budget I'd get a combination of Biketronics speakers in the fairing and some Kicker KSC67 for your rear pods.
This would be night and day over your current set up.

Yeah JJ the soundstream 520.D and the 6.5 pioneers are NOT a match made in heaven. As HAZE said switch out the amp to the PN4.1000D and Go with the 7.1's or the Moto 602's Night and day difference!! and to answer your other question 6x9's are good!!
