I'm building a bagger conversion for my buddy while he's deployed (VROD with a road glide fairing).
I haven't gotten any radio components yet, and before I go ordering OEM stuff, I wanted to get some input.
What's a decent system I could build from available components for some decent sound? My initial thought is a simple marine HU, amp, and 4 speakers with interface for stock bar controls. I'll probably need to get the radio caddy for the road glide fairing, right?
Thanks in advance for the help. If there's a kit or one stop shop for it, I'm all ears. I figure budget is in the $300 range.

Well for starters you will have to bump up your budget for a complete system you will be able to hear at highway speeds.
Low end head unit $150 or so
Amp. $125 +
Speakers $80 + for a average set
There are some pretty good deals in the touring classified right now, but I agree, your budget might need a little bump. The cost of the controller (to use handlebar controls) is another cost to ad into above numbers. Don't rush into anything and do lots of homework here first. Many parts are available 2nd hand and if bought at the right time can come along at a great price. Again, ask lots of questions here before hurrying into anything. When is he scheduled back in the USA?

OEM stuff I can think of is the handlebar controls and wiring for them. Not sure on RG HU mount, but others here will. Stay away from OEM HU and speakers/amp for a few reasons, cost and quality being the 2 biggest ones. Hope to help you and your buddy out. Thanks for doing this and for his service to US!!
