998 clean at 35 on low level. Tested many times. Even without communication between 3 of us, AAWAV, Haze, and myself all use 32. One downside to the 998 is the preout voltage is really low till that last 5 clicks or so on volume and ramps up hard each click there after.

I will say a lot of this is way over thought. The clipping on mp3 gain is not clipping like you think on a amp or source unit. Go buy a good 320kbps mp3 track off Amazon. Perfectly clean and stable file. Mp3 gain will show clipping but it really can be many factors that are not a actual clipping factor in the sense normally interpreted here. So when you continue to lower the track gain level, the more you turn up gains due to lower output voltage. Have to find a happy medium. -5db 1khz tone is right around 98.5 db. So set music to 95 or 96 which is close or just a few db under what the original source file was. This will still leave the tracks at a high enough level to keep gains at a reasonable level and have to volume not be so reduced that as shown in the first post is. Another example of the kiss method here. Keep it simple fellas.

One other thing to add is Audacity is another great program to utilize to see the changes done to the tracks with a nice interface.

Thanks Slye
My son and I are still playing
My library is old
I have songs all over the place, agreed that 320 is a good standard
Im trying to find a Happy medium on all my music, we are getting close
My sons 36 year old ears are better suited to this then my 59 year old ears
I will say, we have clean loud music right now
Im grinin, But I always over think things
At the end of the day, I want to hit the volume level @35 @ 80Mph if need be on the kenwood and know that I wont put the amps or speakers in harms way, we are real close

Why not find out where your head unit distorts instead of willing going past it without knowing where it is? As much as we spend on this stuff might as well know where certain set points are try to protect your investment to a point. Just my thought on this.

That's cool if you know what the hell you're doing. I just wouldn't recommend it to the average newbie that just setting up his system. My sweet spot was 34 when I ran the 998. But there's a big difference between You, Haze, AAWAV, Me and the average newbie that's pulling his fairing off for the first time.

no fancy equiptment here, but after 30+ years of grinding and gouging, my ears tell me 32 on KMR-D765 is bout max clean (safe)

Slyedog, tested the 998 to be free of distortion at max volume (35) a few months ago. I also tested on my own and confirmed what Slyedog found previously.

For the guys that run their Stereo only to 80% of max volume
Do you run your throttle to only 80% of Wide open when passing a car on the highway?

If my engine blew up at 80% I would use only 80%.

Depends on the HU. If it distorts at 80, don't exceed 79.
