I have a 2001 FHTPI that I am replacing the head unit from a Sony to a Aqautic av aq-mp-5bt-h. When going in to replace head unit I noticed that the connections into the hu are different between the two head units. It is an police bike that has an aftermarket radio installed (done before I owned bike). Just wondering what I need to do now? Buy adapter, splice in proper connection? I've added so,e pics to show my problem. Thanks a lot.
You are installing the Sony? You will need an installation kit for the radio. You will splice together the install kit and the radio harness. The install kit will plug into the Harley side and the install kit will plug into the radio.
okay, then the opposite is true. There should be a plug from the bike that was connected to the wiring harness from the radio. You should be able to disconnect that and plug it right into the Aquatic. This would be a fairly thick plug of from the bike.
the Aquatic is junk compared to a good Sony Model, if it was me I'd pivk another Sony and install that. I have installed several AAV units here at my shop and had lots of issues.

The Aquatics use stock HD radio plug. Make sure that the Aq you got is compatible with 01 radio harness. If your radio has a hand control module, remove it and use that plug.
The box says its compatible with1996-2013 models. Is that the control module in the last picture(the red biketronics box). Everything plugged into that is a smaller connector
