Default New Install Issues

Hello! This weekend I installed a new setup in my 2010 FLHX. Took it out for a test ride after getting it tuned up and it sounded awesome, super loud and clean sound. After riding about 20 minutes the audio got really choppy and wouldn't get as loud. Any idea what's going on? Build is below.

Cerwin Vega B52 Amp mounted on top of HU
Infinity 62IX Speakers
8ga power and ground fused and hooked directly to battery.
Aquatic AV Head Unit

Try backing down the gains on the amp. It may be going into clipping/protect mode. If you back off the volume, does it sound better? If it sits over a while and you start it up, is it ok for another 20 min. or so?

I set the gain with a multimeter and set it to 13.7vac per the chart in the sticky with a 1khz test tone at 3/4 volume so hopefully it's not set too high. 75w x 2.5ohm and then the square root is 13.7. I just went back out and fired the radio up again after letting it sit for a while and it sounds good again so I'm wondering if the amp is overheating? I have it Velcro'd to the top of the HU if that makes a diff.

Did you have the bike running when you set the gains? Do you have the AVC off?

Actually, no I didn't have the bike running so that could be an issue... I need to check the AVC but I didn't think this Aquatic unit had it. I'll double check that too.

You do not set the gains by meter and leave them at that point. This is just a starting point. They have to be dialed in by ear from there and yes, the bike has to be running when setting the gains. This is the very reason I never suggest setting amp gains with a meter. Folks read and comprehend just enough to burn their amp or speakers up.

I will bet it went into protect mode since you tuned it while not running. Feeding the amp with 12-13 volts is a big difference than 14-15 volts with it running. Start it and tune it by ear.

So pulled the fairing back off and started the bike. When I hooked up the multimeter it was nearly 18v. With the bike running I dialed the gain back to 13.7v and went for a ride. Ran it for about a half hour and it never cut out so i think we're good to go. Thanks for everyone's help!

By the way, these Kappa 62IX and the b52 sound awesome for a 2 speaker setup! I'm really pleased with it.

  • I would still fine tune the amp gains by ear with it running. You very well might have a bit more gains to obtain by tuning by ear.
