there are a couple people that have done this with 13-down lowers. Box size ends up with a little less air volume but is not that hard to do.
Did they basically take an 8" speaker spacer ring and use it for the mount and then use fiberglass to hold it to the speaker enclosure? If so did they think it was worth the effort?

8” plastic ring epoxy on and do some mods work inside. I’m not sure final testing has been done yet to comment on sound but I would guess it’s way better than a 6.5” if done right.
