Default Stereo Question

I recently replaced my stock stereo in my 11 Ultra with an aftermarket Sony unit. Right after doing that I found out that the Boom Audio Speakers I had were not compatible with the unit (4 ohm head unit 2 ohm speakers). Not that technical with auto audio...

So I purchased a pair of Alpine 5 1/4 speakers for the batwing. I also had a pair of Boom Audios in my lowers. I am pulling them all and will be putting the stock stereo and 4 speakers up for sale in the classifieds soon.

My question is has anyone put 5 1/4 subs in the lowers? I know that I am only going to get so much bass out of the 5 1/4 Alpines in the batwing. I know it is not a car etc... but was wondering if 5 1/4 subs in the lowers would get me a little bass.

Has anyone done this? If so did you have to install an amp too or not?

Thanks
Joe

Joe, your best bet is to put a larger pair of speakers in the fairing. You can put sizes as large as 8" in there while the majority of folks don't fool with that size and stick with either 6.5, 7.1, or 7.25" sizes.

As for the sub in the lower, simply not worth it.
1. you're not going to get much bass response out of a 5.25" speaker to begin with. These are considered more "mid-bass" drivers and usually have a fairly narrow audio spectrum to work within.
2. again, you'd be better off with a larger speaker down there. a LOT of 6.5" speakers will fit fine.

To further your options, you're much better off with an amp in your system than running speakers off the head unit.

Why not put 6.5's in the batwing? I have 6.5" separates (tweeters in two gauge holes) and some 6.5" coaxs in my lowers and anyone who hears my system says it is about as good as they have heard w/o going to 6x9's in the saddlebags. A 6.5" speaker will only produce so much low end whether you call it a subwoofer or not. I'm completely happy with my system even at highway speeds. There are a lot of great speakers you will see written about on the forum, but I happen to be a big fan of Focals. I haven't heard anything I like better for the money. Good luck and let us know what direction you go.

Thank you both for the responses.

I have not installed the 5 1/4s yet. Just got them the other day and have not had the time to work on it.

I will look at some larger speakers for both the batwing and lowers.

Now going with a larger speaker I will have to figure out how to mount them correct? The holes are not going to line up going with a larger speaker, do I need some type of adaptor ring or something?

Thanks
Joe

yes sir you'll need adapter rings for the fairing. Hawg-Wired, Arc Audio, Cycle Sounds, Amazon.. you can find them just about anywhere these days.

So what a disappointment this whole thing turned out to be.

I originally had the stock head unit and the Boom Audio speakers in my fairing and lowers. The thing that bugged me the most was having to run a wire from my iphone to the front of the unit then having to run another to charge the iphone.

So I thought aftermarket just plug in the iphone like I do in my jeep and it charges at the same time so only one iphone chord nice and easy clean etc.. Plus usually aftermarket units have some more detailed EQ and more power.

So I ended up ordering the Sony DSX-S100 and the kit so I could still use my handlebar controls. Then I find out that I can't use the Boom speakers because of 2ohm 4 ohm conflict. Ok no big deal I go out get a nice pair of Alpine 6 1/2" speakers then order the adapters and I am all set.

I install the speakers and it sounds pretty good sitting in the driveway. I go for a ride and I cant hear a damn thing. I rank it up to 35 to hear the music and it is just distorted and tin garbage. I play with every setting on the radio, call the place where I bought it and still just garbage. So today I pulled out that crappy Sony and put back in the original stock unit and there it is a good sounding stereo system some bass coming from the 6 1/2" speakers and clear with no distortion. I go a step further and put the Booms back in my lowers and it just ROCKS!!!

Of course I am back to two chords hanging again and out $300 for buying that junk Sony radio but at least I have some tunes that sound good...

and you're doing all this WITHOUT an amp?

moral of the story for me is next time I'll ask more detailed and specific questions when someone needs help. I "assumed" because you were talking about woofers in the lowers that you either had an amp or were going to add one. My bad. Sorry for your loss bud. Can you not return the product where you got it?

I did not think I would need an amp to run just (2) 6 1/2" speakers. I have a Jeep running a JVC Head unit, 2 door speakers, 2 61/2" in the roll bar and the stock sub with no amp and eve with the top and doors off that system will blow you out.

I really thought that Sony unit could handle 2 speakers...

I am not sure if they will take it back or not. The guy in tech support had asked me to check that my speakers were wired up properly and that they had the proper resistance. He said he was guessing that it would all check out and I would probably be sending the radio back. I told him I would check and call him back Monday.

I did all the checking when I got home and everything checked out so I since it is going to be nice this weekend and a group of us plan to ride to DC on Sunday I really wanted a stereo that was working so I changed it out.

I did not mention where I bought it or ay other details then the model of radio which you could get at Best Buy as to not ding them until I talk to them again on Monday. It very well could be a bad radio or something.

At any rate it sounds good, I am no longer frustrated about it and looking forward to a nice long ride with my wife and friends on Sunday. And a shorter ride by myself tomorrow.
