Upgraded the head unit to the Aquatics AV. Bike came with the J&M's in fairing but I don't think they sound that good. I would like to upgrade those at this time. Maybe down the road do either speakers in lowers or 6x9's in saddlebag lids. What do you guys recommend for the fairing? Shouldn't need an amp for just the fairing speakers since the Aquatic is preamped? 09 Street glide . Listen mostly to rock/ metal and a little old rap.. Looking for a clean sound with a little punch at highway speeds. I'm new to audio so any help is appreciated.
You defiantly need an amp with any after market system. That is the reason why your setup doesn't sound good. If it were me, I would get an amp, install and tune it to the speakers you have now. With an amp you may like the sound of those J&M's. I doubt it but you never know. Those J&M's are mediocre at best but just maybe they will soind good with a good amp like a stinger.
I'm very happy with the cerwin vega B52 for the money and the sound that I'm getting out of the Hertz HCX 165.3 speakers. I'm tuning them as I go. Right now I'm getting a lot more highs that I want but I'm working on it. Changed head unit to the sony XAV-5000 at the same time so I'm working through getting it all dialed in.
Getting any significant bass at highway speeds is difficult with a 2 speaker system, IMO. At lower speeds and sitting still the sound is really good though.

Yes you will need an amp. The "amp" in the Aquatic is not really an amp.
Amp choice will depend on budget. I would also go right ahead and get a good 4 channel amp to push another set of speakers if you're thinking to add lower or lids. Plan ahead.
