Mike,
I have the same Sony HU and it works flawless for me so maybe you just got a bad one. Also I believe the biggest difference in the MEX-M71 and MEX-M100 is the size of the built in amp.
Randy
Randy,
Thanks for the info .
I really like the MEX-M71BT and was thinking I got a bad one also.
Seems like the old saying, "if it wasn't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all". LOL!!!
I'll be removing the HU this week and sending it back for a new one.
Hopefully I'll get a working one this time.
Mike
Well I took the opportunity of a nice day and removed the Sony MEX M71BT that I had various problems with and replaced it with my old Alpine CDE HD149BT.
I will be sending the Sony back for a replacement.
I don't want to go with another MEX M71BT but was thinking of the MEX M100BT.
Any thoughts or different suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Mike
Wait brother, hit the brakes a little. 2 years ago I was 100% in your shoes. Same HUA360 and a Sony MEXM, mine was a 70, not a 71, but identical symptoms. I talked to the guys at HW and their tech guy was AWESOME. Mine ended up being not audio related at all, I know weird, but fact. He told me I had something else wrong that would surface soon enough. The HUA was getting stray voltage, or unexpected voltage changes and was triggering crazy stuff. My fix was a worn through Cruise wire that I learned about the hard way on the interstate!! I know the Biketronics controller ignored those strays. I hope this helps and please let us know what your results are.

Thanks for the info Kris, I appreciate it Brother.
I put in a new HUA360 Controller which solved the problems I had with my hand controls.
I had a problem with my Cruise Control last year and replaced the Cruise Control Switch which solved that problem.
I installed the Alpine CDE-HD149BT the other day and so far there have been no issues with it other then not sounding as well as the Sony did.
I am sending the Sony MEX m71BT back and replacing it with the Sony MEX M100BT and see how that goes.
Mike
The Sony MEX M71BT, that I returned, arrived at The Vendor yesterday and I was given store credit for it.
Today I called and placed an order for The Sony MEX M100BT.
Once it arrives and I get it installed I will make a post on my thoughts.
I sure hope I have better luck with the New Sony.
Mike
I had similar issues with a head unit. Problem was the hand control unit I was using (can't remember which one). I swapped it for the Hawg Wired unit and it worked great for about a year. Then one day problems popped up. Turns out one of the wires had come a little loose. Fixed that and it's been fine since.
If you start seeing problems again, I would check all the wiring like has been suggested before swapping out head units, especially if you found one you like.

Zach, I had a problem with my Hawg Wired HUA360 that was about 5 years old so I replaced it with a new one and all my hand controls are working well once again.
The problem I had with the Sony MEX M71BT was that it continued to return to DEMO Mode and loose all the presets every time I turned it off for an extended period.
I have since installed my old Alpine CDE HD149BT and I am not having any of the problems I had with the Sony so I believe all my wiring was done correctly.
The only reason I am going to install the Sony MEX M100BT is that in my opinion the Alpine doesn't play as well as the Sony Head Units and the MEX M100BT gets very good reviews.
Once I get it installed I will post up my thoughts on it.

Mike I just thought I toss in that I have a two year old Sony head unit in one of my trucks. I have found that every time I have removed power from it and powered it on again it is in Demo mode. I suspect that what you are seeing may be the deck losing power momentarily. Granted the bad connection could be inside the head unit itself or maybe the wiring harness.

Thanks for the info Hoyt.
I suspected that my power was dropping below 12 volts so I charged the battery fully and kept the Battery Tender connected but it still would go into DEMO Mode.
I'm hoping it was a bad unit as the Alpine hasn't done that since I reinstalled it.
I'm also looking forward to the Sony MEX M100BT because I like the way the Sony Head-unit's play.

I also like the SongPal app that Sony has so you can set the unit up (and even operate it) with your phone. It made setting the crossovers and EQ a lot easier than digging through the menus on the deck.
