Default Head unit adjustments after setting amp gain

I know part of the process of setting the amp gain is to set the head unit EQ to flat. After setting the gain, how does adjusting the EQ affect things?

Yes, setting the gains with the EQ flat is the right thing to do. Once you have the gains set, if you then drastically boost any of the freq bands to the point you are now pushing into distortion, you may have to adjust the gains again accordingly.

So this begs the question, why would you not set the gain with the EQ where you typically have it set?

Its a shell game brother. Tuning is not normally a once and done deal. If you adjust your gains then the power to the speakers adjust and may change the way they sound. Say you set your EQ with the gains all the way down and you are happy with it. Then you set the gains now your speakers may be reacting different with the different power level. So by doing the gain first, you are not focused on the best sound quality, you are only trying to combat distortion. One you have no distortion then you can work on getting the cleanest sound. If distortion creeps in you may have to go back to the gains and so on. It takes time and you will probably have the hood open more than you expect.
