Default No audio with bike running

Happy new year everyone! So, I’ve been having intermittent issues for a while, but think I have narrowed it down. Key in engine off, audio works fine. I hook up a battery charger to get 14 volts to set gains and as soon as it gets over 13 volts I get no audio. If I plug into my amps (arc moto and sd250) into an external source there is sound. The only other component is a Rockford dsr1, which I installed to replace a jl fix 82. I don’t think I would have to faulty dsps and am now thinking it’s the head unit.

I also tried turning the key on engine off and have audio until I start the bike. Something is telling me the radio doesn’t like more than battery voltage. Any ideas?? I have the factory 6.5 touch screen, bike is a 14 ultra limited.

Have u triple checked all the power, ground and remote turn on wiring and logic? Amps power ground all wired to the battery. The amp remote turn on wires all wired to the DSP. The DSP power & ground wired directly to the battery. The DSP remote IN wired to the accessory system or cig lighter. Triple check the wiring schematic for the DSP as they are not always the colors u would typically expect.

Ask me how I know. Sometimes these very simple things can be overlooked and it raises hell on the setup and troubleshooting.

I believe everything is good. I just added the sd to power my horns so they are no longer parallel to my fairing speakers. I ran new power and ground from battery to both amps.
I have the garage bagger stereo harness for the dsp so that’s the only component not directly wired. I can go check that now to see if anything is dropping out once the voltage goes up. I’m also going to plug a stock speaker into the front speaker connection from the radio to try and isolate this.
if it is the stock head unit, what is everyone’s consensus, Sony ax5000?

Brother, I think u can find the issue and hopefully it's a simple wiring thang.

If u go aftermarket take ur time and get one that meets all ur needs. The Sony stuff is damn readily available and priced right but IMHO the Kenwood and Alpine stuff smokes the Sony. Some of these decks are even moving into wireless CarPlay which is never a bad thing on a sled. Less wires and connection points is alway a good thing.

Thank you for your help so far!

So I just went and checked everything again. Both amps have proper power and ground directly to the battery. Checked across the garage bagger stereo harness and have 12.xx volts key on and 14 when I hook charger up so all seems good there.
I plugged stock speakers in so all aftermarket is by passed and as soon as the bike went over 13.3 volts audio cut out. Turned the charger off and as soon as the voltage hit around 12.35 the sound came back. Did this multiple times and it is like clock work. My guess at this point that it’s time for a new head unit. I guess that’s one way to not have to worry about tuning around the factory curves hahaha.

I do ride in the rain so my main concern is the radio not being damaged and the ability to use my handlebar controls. Any preferences?

That's some strange damn stuff u got going on there. I know u checked the volts across the Bagger harness but can u eliminate that from the test to see what happens?

If ur wanting full thumb control functionality with aftermarket ur gonna be disappointed. Basically volume, mute, next & previous song is about all ur gonna get.

And waterproof ain't gonna happen either other than a faceplate that will magnetically attach to the HU during the rain.

What year ya ur sled?

14 Ultra Limited.

As long as I can skip through songs and raise/lower volume I’ll be happy.

I just don’t want to get stuck in a rain storm and ruin a head unit. somehow I seem to hit a couple good rain storms a year haha

Reach out to Biketronics and see what HUs they can offer u as they also include the rain cover. Then compare to the Sony. Then compare to the Boom 6.5.

If u decide that maybe getting a Boom and dropping a 8/2 flash on it and retaining the OEM functionality let me know as I have a 14 6.5 laying around.

I'm still damn intrigued that ur HU audio signal is dropping out at higher voltage as that really is the first time I have heard of such a thing w that HU. To the point where I want to send my HU to u just to make sure we gave properly isolated the problem.

Good luck brother. And take ur time picking the perfect HU for ur needs.

I’m just looking for easy, simple, car play would be great and ability to control radio with handle bar controls. I’m leaning towards aftermarket just so I don’t have to deal with the boom bin eq curves, makes tuning so much easier.

If you want, I could probably send you my head unit if you wanted to check it out.

I seem to recall a post a long time ago of someone having the same problem. I can’t remember the outcome tho.

I think Haze might have had a hand in trouble shooting it, maybe he remembers?
