Hell, just when I thought I was learning stuff I go and get confused. I.had everything clean on my NVX amps with my volume at 40/50. So are we saying the sony HU is crap, or the SD nano amps?
not saying that anything is crap. what i'm saying is that you do not have accurate data to make the accurate tuning setting. you've been doing it by ear unless you've been using a tool that i missed in the reading(possibiity). each amp is going to have a different sensitivity and response. the o sc0pe is what is going to tell you that at 30 out of 40 you are good or not. some better quality head units don't clip at full volume setting, their just not all the same.
quick and dirty no tool test
use a lower setting for max volume on your head unit, say 35
turn down the level output on the dsr1, say 5 clicks
now try making adjustments with your gain control **** and see how it sounds.
When you used the tools of the trade, you KNOW what is doing What and WHERE, so you KNOW where to make the adjustment or what component is not living up to it's expectation or reputation. hope that helps.

Marco is giving good advice Gun, one thing you could do to see where your problem lies is take the DSP out of the circuit for now. Plug the head unit straight into the amp and see if things are still twitchy. If it behaves better than you know you are probably boosting the signal too much in your DSP somehow. If it still sounds like crap then shoot the amp and start over.
I appreciate it guys. When we installed it @dabears1985 used a multimeter and dd1 to test everything. He is way smarter at this stuff than I am, but he sure looks like he knows what he is doing. he measures the rca with the multimeter to make sure the right voltage was input into the dsp.
Let me change things up a bit. Everything is about to get replaced, thanks to the good old corporate bonus. What is a better, more efficient amp that can put out 100 watts at 4 ohms and 200 at 2ohms?
Ur gonna have a hard time beating that amp for the footprint and consistency in spec data. But it's way overpriced. I have never paid more than $450 for one and consider it a solid value at that price. Above that price I would look to the new SD line coming out.
