Based on your thread title, there are "competitions" for these systems?
Is the return on investment even possible, doing this?
I honestly don't know if there's a living to be made, doing this. (If so, I can quit golfing, as I haven't made squat!)
If you do make these "upgrades," please, please, PLEASE, only use the system during competitions. There's nothing worse that hearing Steppenwolf at 120db, with the added Doppler effect, making the pitch "off..."

120dB? Imagine 150+dB on some of these bikes!

I'm with Haze. Build what you like and sounds good, if you end up in a competition, have fun with it!!

I do just that, and have entered in 4 different comps. 3 were local ran by a local shop. The 4th was at a Sound Warz event. 1st local event I placed 2nd. The next one, I placed 3rd. The last I didn't place.

The Sound Warz event I came in first, in the Street Beater class. All of the events were big fun and you meet some pretty cool people.

That’s kind of the approach I was going to take DSM... maybe make some changes (I do really like what I have) and have fun with a competition or two. As currently configured I have 10 speakers and it’s no where near the level that the 10+ speaker bikes would be in from what I’ve seen. I can hear the 6x9s going down the road enough to know they are there, but the real sound I’m getting riding is in front of me. That’s why I was thinking of dropping the saddlebag lid speakers to drop a class. If I dropped the lowers I would definitely notice that riding, so I thought maybe 8”s in the uppers to make up for some of the loss riding. Different 8”s in the bags would solely be for competitions and parking lot showing off as the bass is in the wind when riding.

Since I can’t go to any competitions right now to keep seeing/hearing other setups, I thought I’d post to get some suggestions on what configuration might be good if I decided to dip my toes in these waters for fun. I definitely get Haze’s points though and I’m going to keep building it for me, and if I find a configuration I like for riding that is also competition worthy maybe I’ll enter one.

Thanks guys!

Slim,
I would roll like DSM and the rest of us that enjoy all aspect of the HD culture, including audio and start hitting up some of these shows or retreats. With Inf that exposure you will meet some great folks, do some great riding and also have a chance to hear numerous different set-ups and then decide what general strategies could fit your goals. Never start on any journey without having a reasonable idea where the finish line is.

Enjoy the process and I look forward to seeing u at some of these road trips.

This is all most DIYers can do. We don't have the time and resources to compete full time.

There are guys with top bikes that are DIY'ers…..guys that build their bikes at home. It can be done, but it's expensive learning!!

There are exceptions to every rule! I'm sure that it's not the norm though? To be competitive is a huge commitment like someone already pointed.

It is, but it's not impossible if it's your hobby and you are passionate about it. Munir, arguably the best bike ever isn't a shop owner. Brad Small has won SOS MW twice and his bike is built in his garage, same as Earl Jones who's won SOS MW before. It's not the norm, but knowing these guys personally they have ALOT invested in their bikes, both time and money. Time I think is more important than money because they've made the contacts, built relationships, etc. to see, hear and learn what works and doesn't work. I think that's the biggest difference between those DIY guys, and guys that just surf the forum or Facebook looking for the latest speaker to use with no clue on actual application.

Well put haze, I love the hobby/sport, but with littles in the house I couldn't invest the time to be competitive. Blowing vacation to go to comps/rallies. Missing kids sporting events and other extracurriculars. Countless hours tuning and tweaking. It's not in the cards.
