Hey guys, I few years back I got some great recommendations on here to build a great sounding system on my 2012 Ultra for around $300. Times got hard and the bike went away, but now I have (am picking up after Michigan lockdown is over) a 2000 Ultra Classic. I would like some decent recommendations on speakers (stock locations) and a 4 channel amp that will fit in the fairing. Any help or suggestions will be appreciated. At this time I am planning on keeping the stock head unit and using the aux input, I really want the bike audio to look stock. Thanks in advance, this forum really came through last time.

Factory speakers are 5.25", but you can buy adapters to bump them up to 6.5". Stinger SPX 700.4 is an excellent 4 channel amp and fits well in the fairing. Many on the forum recommend the Mmat 601cx speakers. When I was just running fairing speakers, I used Hertz HCX 165, and they were really good and very easy to tune.
Thanks, I will take a look at te amp. If 5.25" speakers will drop in all 4 stock holes, that is probably what I will go for.
Have a look at the Stinger SPX 700. Great amp for what you are doing. You would be way further ahead going with 6.5' speakers. They bolt right in with a simple adapter plate that mounts behind the grill and out of sight. I prefer to use the Metra 82-9601
Not sure what your budget is, but if you can swing a set of the Mmats PA 601.4cx for your fairing they are a very good speaker. Some guys prefer to not spend the extra $$$ on the Mmats for the tour pack pods as they require an adapter like the Vtwin speaker adapter which is a bit pricey. Guys will quite often drop the Polk MM652 in the rear pods.
Hope that helps
It's been awhile since I pulled all my factory HU gear out of my 05 Ultra and put in my Sony HU. Can't remember how much room there is on top of the factory HU. Hopefully someone else will chime in that can confirm the Stinger will fit on top of the factory HU in the 2000 UC.
I suspect you will be able to use that stock head unit with that amp. If the amp you have is a model TM400x4ad they seem to work well with speaker level inputs, which is what the stock head units have.
Also Bluesman makes a good recommendation on the Polk MM 652s for the rear pods. Users have reported that they will fit in the stock pods of the older bikes without spacers by rotating them to where the magnets drop in place.
Also as a side note I think someone had posted a while back that the 2006-2913 head units will work in your bike with an adapter of some kind if you like the stock look. Maybe something to keep in mind down the road. Iron Cross Audio can add a bluetooth chip to those things.
So I picked up a used RF 400-4AD, I guess I am looking for speakers next. Is a new HU a must, or can it be upgraded later?
The HU can be upgraded latter.
Like Hoyt mentioned, if your amp allows for high level inputs you can hook right up to it. If not you will need a high level to RCA converter to connect your amp.
You are going to most definitely want to upgrade speakers.
Look for a good set of speakers for your fairing. I will mention the 6.5" Mmats again, just because they sound way better and get louder than most of the other coax speakers out there. You can save money on the speakers, but you will usually sacrifice sound quality and volume. I use the Metra 82-9601 speaker adapters usually for the fairing off Amazon.
I hate to see anyone upgrade their factory audio to end up with limited gains. You've got a not bad amp to work with so may as well get some decent speakers to finish it off, at least for the fairing. Cheap out on the pods if you have to. I believe there are some 6.5" kickers that fit the rest pods, but again I haven't used them personally.
Rock on!
Thanks, MMats in the Front, and probably Polk in the Tour Pak is the plan right now. I'm headed out to get the bike in a few minutes. I had a deal worked out, put the deposit down and the dealer shut down the next day, that was 7 weeks ago. They opened back up yesterday, so I am riding out to Battle Creek this morning to finish the deal.
