The first expansion I did after the default four speakers was to add lowers. It makes it a lot easier to hear the music because it is coming at your ears from another direction so you don't have to turn it up as loud. You would need another amp or a more powerful four channel amp to get the most out of that setup though. A lot of folks like the Stinger 700/4.
As far as volume goes when I used to use the AUX jack a lot it depended on the device. On my old Apple iPods I had to back the volume down just a little bit from max to keep from over driving and causing distortion. On my Samsung phones I had to turn the volume up to max.
