Caffeine I'll throw my .02 in about oil since you are here. On my 2010 Ultra with around 44,000 miles on it I have to add less than half a quart of oil between changes. Myself and the previous owner have always run Amsoil synthetic 20W50. I think that's pretty good considering my bike has that problem a lot of 96 inch motors had where the gasket between the case halves pokes out in the bottom and leaks a little oil.
I had a new oil pump put in the bike about 4500 miles ago.
It's due for the 25,000 maintenance and I'm bringing it in on Thursday.
I've had to add 3 quarts of oil during this interim to keep it topped off.
I know I come across as a greenhorn by asking this, but I'm not proud. If you are going to lay into me...just be gentile....I'm fragile.
Am I expecting too much by feeling like a bike should not have to have 3 quarts of oil added to it every 4.5k miles? Maybe this is how v-twin, air cooled engine are?
bike runs fine, great in fact....no smoke or unusual smell in the exhaust
So have you not changed the oil since the pump was put in 13,000 miles ago or am I misinterpreting your post?
I will tell you that the M-8's can have a sumpting problem that will push the oil into the tranny thru the clutch rod opening. The statement I heard it was do to the smaller (thinner) primary and vacuum causing the oil to cross into the tranny. HD did not do a recall but if the problem occurs, they have a "kit" to repair and will do so even if not under warranty under a service bulletin with the dealers.
one....I took the bike in yesterday for the 25k maintenance and the tech said that while it's generally 'accepted' that these may burn up to a quart every 1000-1500 miles, he doesn't think that is acceptable, they are going to rip into it
second point....this is the very first civil discussion about oil I've ever witnessed on HDF.....i've said it before....the audio guys here at HDF are the best of the best here....great guys, super helpful
