Pete since you use the intercom feature so seldom if the wired route gets too tricky Fortnine on YouTube does lots of reviews on communication setups for bikes. This one caught my eye a while back:

I know it is dealing with range issues but the Vnetphone units he tested can be had for about $100 a pair:
